I'm asking this here, because I know there are some people here whose opinion/advice I respect. It also will determine whether I get a REO, as the RM2 seems to be the defacto standard for REO use.

My nephew gifted me a RM2. It's easy to build and provides a good vape. I have a 28ga Kanthal coil, 1.5 ohms, wrapped on a .059 drill. It's positioned as recommended for the REO, close to the deck for reduced TH, and as close to the airhole as I can get it. Air hole aligned well. Airhole has been drilled out to .059.

I vape my 2.2 ohm carto tank at 6-7 watts on a Vamo. I've run the RM2 at 10-12 watts. Heats fairly quickly, plenty of vapor and flavor is ok.

The problem is I get irritation and soreness on the roof of my mouth at the very back of my throat. This happens rather quickly. I've noticed that the extreme airiness of an rba causes me to really pull hard when I'm taking my double mouth to lung hit.

If I think about what I'm doing, I can lessen my pull, but then it feels like I'm just sucking air through a garden hose. It helps with the soreness, but doesn't make it not happen.

I'd like to work through this, as I'd like to move away from carto tanks. The cartos get stiff in just a day or so and start tasting bad in 2 days. I'm replacing them every 3 days or so.

I like the look and quality of the REO, and everything I've seen (been lurking awhile) tells me this is the way I'd like to go. But if I can't solve this sore throat problem its no joy.

I'm open to suggestions.

Perhaps the airhole was drilled out unnecessarily. You may be getting to much air draw because you made the airhole too large. You might be able to correct the mistake by drilling a smaller hole, restoring the original design, and covering the drilled out airhole with fingernail polish, or something similar.

I recently picked up some new drip tips.

Most of them have the large dripping holes.

I have noticed that they make a huge difference in the air intake when vaping.

I can easily do a straight lung hit using these tips. Where with the tip that comes with a RM2 gives more of a tight pull.

It had me doing some experimentation with the different holes on some of my tips.

You might find a simple solution like changing the size of your tip, or the hole in the tip will help.

I haven't had a sore throat from vaping since I changed to organic cotton but it seems like you have a different kind of "sore".

What you are experiencing is from the way you're having to pull...right?

To correct the airiness, try putting a tiny bit of cotton under the coil nuzzled up close to the air hole so that is restricts the air intake "slightly" or more if needed but not so much that it blocks the air hole This way you might be able to take a slower, longer more comfortable draw.

I got a RM2 in a trade on classys that had been drilled out too much. To make it smaller (you could do this just to experiment and see if it would help) I cut a band from a carto condom and put it around the RM2 cap to cover half of the hole. It helps. It's not my favorite RM2 for sure, but it's a fix. Also.....what wicking material are you using? I've heard of silica causing sore throat/mouth.

Wow, lot's of quick responses.

I drilled out the hole in an attempt to improve airflow and cool the vape, thinking it was too hot, as I had the problem before drilling the hole out.

I'm using cotton, the same as I use with the vertical coil of the same specifics in my Evod. No problem with it.

I run 50\50 PG/VG. Right now I'm vaping 80% VG unflavored to test if it's a PG sensitivity issue or a flavoring problem. Doesn't seem to make a difference.

The funny thing is I actually think I'm drawing harder on the airy RM2 than I do on a tighter evod or carto tank. It just feels like I'm not pulling anything in, so I hit it really hard. I can normally do 2 draws of about 5 seconds until the 10 sec cutoff on the Vamo kicks in.(this is on my tank or evod)

Bigger air hole, drawing hard, going from 6 watts to 12 watts. Sounds like your hitting the back of your throat with hotter vapor than you're used to.

You could try a larger ID coil, 5/64 moving the ohms up to around 2 ohms, this will put the watts at 8 to 9 and lower the heat of the vapor. Also a longer drip tip would help cool the vapor.

I would build a 2 ohm coil and work my way down. The hot juice is burning your mouth. A 1.5 ohm on a rm2 is way diffrent than a 1.5 carto in terms of vapor production. The same thing happened to me first when I got my reo so I bumped up the ohms for a while and slowly worked my way down to get use to the hotter vapor
Ps also move the way you put the drip tip in your mouth, don't always aim the vapor in the same spot inside your mouth

I actually did both these things last night. 30ga KanthalA, 16ga needle, 11 wraps (?), 2.2 ohms. Was running about 8 watts. Modified my drip tip position to be more like I draw on a carto. More horizontal than vertical. Aiming vapor more on my tongue and less towards the roof of my mouth.

I still have to consciously slow down and soften my draw, which has helped. Getting better results now, need to keep working at it. So far, I'm seeing a difference.
