what is the difference between the two modes?

The short non-mathematical explanation is that RMS more closely approximates the DC voltage that you've set on your device.

Do nothing. When you put in your battery.... it's already defaulted to RMS mode. You'll find that if you hold down the left button and change it... you'll have to do it again to get back to RMS mode.

Although I have a V3, it defaults to AVG when I change the batteries.... I have no idea why, but it does.

Are you sure? On the V5, when you hold down left button.... MEAN shows up first.... meaning you were already in RMS mode and it's now changing to MEAN or AVG. In other words, which ever mode shows up when you hold down left button.... you are/were in the opposite mode.

Yup, absolutely sure. When I hold down the left button after a battery swap, RMS comes up.

Oddly enough, if I swap the batteries fast enough, it stays in RMS mode, but if I take too long (usually I'll pull the battery, put it on the charger, get the spare out of the storage case, then put it in) it goes back to MEAN.
