Rocket (Kayfun clone) leaking from air holes.

So I just finished my first build for my Rocket RBA. I got 1.7 ohms with five wraps of 0.3 kanthal (I think thats the wire, anyway). It seems to be vaping pretty nice, except it's leaking like crazy from the air holes. Every few hits I seem to have to wipe the air hole adjustment ring. It's so annoying because it's vaping like a beaut! This was my first attempt at my own build so I probably did something completely wrong. Obviously I don't want to continue using this until I figure out how to stop it so for now I've resorted back to a prebuilt tank.

Any ideas? Any common mistakes I need to look out for?

Thanks!

Over Der
first off,,the wick needs to sit up above the air hole,,the higher the better, flavor get betters the higher it is

dump that 2mm silica and get some 2m ekowool,,

do you have your air flow tightened all the way down ?? if it is too tight it will create extra vacuum to the tank and flood rather easy

your wicks need to be approx 1\2 inch past the coil on each side,to soak up the juice being drawn into the atty chamber

The Rocket will not leak at all if the cotton (what I use) is laid down in front of the juice "valleys" on the bottom. You can even lay them down on their side and they wont leak.

If you want a fast fix, put some cotton inside BELOW the coil and up to the coil......make sure the air hole that is directly under your coil is not obstructed.

If you want a permanent fix, your wick should come out of the coil, go down to the base and be laid across the juice valleys/juice holes (there are two of them). These two valleys need to have wick in front of them on any Kayfun type build or the thing will fill up with juice and leak.

My wife and daughter are vaping rockets as we speak. Ive owned these clones for a couple of months now as well as other Kayfun type toppers.

Yup, what Thunderball said ^^^^ .

One more thought. I fill mine from the top, unscrewing the top plate. I put my finger on the air holes while I do that to avoid leaking, but I always get a bit anyway. I'm pretty sure screwing down the top plate forces juice through the passageways. I need to get a bigger needle so I can fill through the fill port with the Rocket upside down. So after filling I get a bit of gurgling and it will start to leak after a while. I turn it upside down and blow though the drip tip and that clears the air holes. I use a piece of paper towel to collect it as more than you would think will come out. After that it does not leak no matter what orientation it's in.

One other thing to watch for is the small silicone O-ring under that top part in the center. It can fall into the tank when you assemble it and then the whole tank will drain through the air hole if you don't fix it. I take the drip tip off and use a small screw driver when assembling. This has stopped this from happening for me.

ETA: I just did a re-wick and fill. What I did was when putting back the top plate after filling, I screwed it on until the outer O-ring made contact, turned it upside down and then screwed all the way on. No leaking through the air hole at all :thumb:

Thanks for all the help guys! I've figured out the likely problem – I completely forgot to have the tails of the wick poking out the chamber through the juice 'canals'. I just tucked it all in the chamber, leaving the juice channels open so that must be why the liquid can literally pour out! I'll sort it when I'm home and report back.

Thanks for all the other tips too, hugely appreciated!

I have not tried it, but I've always read that you should not put anything in the juice channels or juice flow will be choked off. I'm having more problems with dry hits than any flooding with 70% VG. Juice flow is controlled by vacuum in a bottom coil atty. That is what stops it from leaking/flooding.

Yea, turns out what you suggested about blowing through the drip tip whilst holding it upside-down works a treat to clear it out! Vapes beautifully with no leaks after that. I think maybe the build isn't perfect and more juice is entering the chamber than the ideal amount, so will have a play around with a new build soon.

I also fill it by doing the flip upside-down after contact with the o-ring is made technique but still got flooding – hence why I believe my build needs work.

Thanks!

I absolutely obliterated the flooding issue by getting my local vape shop to build me a microcoil with cotton wick. The thing has worked without a hitch, I can fill it up without a worry, I get absolutely zero flooding and I've never had a better vape. The Rocket, when built properly, is an incredible vape. Great value for money! So happy now!

Im having an issue with my rocket leaking from the side - not the fill hole - but from where you unscrew it to build your coils. I heard that you can buy a bigger oring to stop this leaking but dont know where to get the orings from. Anyone know? thanks!

I don't understand where it's leaking from. I read 'from the side where you unscrew it to build your coils'. Do you mean from between the outer tubes?

Got my rocket RBA, and got the same leaking problem from the air intake, only way to stop it, is screw all the way in, then of course draw to tight and get juice in the mouth

I'm doing a micro coil with cotton and got cotton down in the channels, it vapes really well, just can't stop the damn thing leaking.
