there's a slight scent to the vapor while actually vaping, but no, no leftover scent, nothing sticks, nothing at all like cigarettes.
The look and colour, etc, I wouldn't worry about too much, sure, go for the white/red led, etc, but the part that matters is sticking something in your mouth, sucking on it, feeling the smoke flow in and hit your throat, the ease of the nicotine absorbing, then blowing the visible 'smoke' back out.
e-cigs aren't exactly like smoking, It's kinda like apples and oranges, but both apples and oranges are fruits

It's a tad difficult to explain, all I can recommend is to take the plunge, you'll be glad you did - I was terribly skeptical to begin with, but I ended up trying, and was blown away.
the UU kits are nice, as someone previously suggested, but they won't give you enough 'consumable' to last you a week.
The 2 batteries to swap out, charger, etc, will keep you going for months, hardware wise - but you're gonna want to get at least 10 cartomizers, and I'd recommend a bottle of juice (just a 5ml one) so you can try out the refilling. (get juice of same flavour as a 5pack of cartomizers)
You're best to get the UU, add on an extra 5pack of a tobacco type flavour you think you might like, and if you drink coffee, get a pack of the coffee or cappuccino, and a 5ml refill bottle.
Then ask for the guys at V4L (in the comments section of your order) to mix the 5 carts that come with it to give you a mix to try for "a pack and a half a day marlboro light menthol smoker" (or whatever it is) - Somehow the guys always manage to figure out teh perfect combo (lots of practice, I guess) that gives you a sampling that will help you figure out what you do and don't like.
Also, as previously mentioned, I suspect that 24mg will be a good starting spot for you, or thereabouts.
Edit: I forgot to say - Plan on an initial order to get the gear and starter stuff as I mentioned above, and to make a second order about 5 days later, (much smaller - just some flavours, no gear) - that'll arrive just after a week in. You'll probably be able to coast for a week or 3 on that.
Also, If you can handle repeat mail costs, you'll be happier making many small orders than occasional big ones - it'll let you get new stuff more often, etc. (I don't do this, I gotta make every penny count, but I wish I could, like JenJen and others.. (although for all I know JenJen's orders aren't small, just frequent

)
Every time I make an order, about the same time I get the 'order shipped' email, I remember that 'I forgot X flavour I really wanted', and I've gotta wait a couple of weeks till I can put the next order in
