So my weekend actually started Thursday nite. I received "the phone call" The ones we don't want to get. My husband was involved in an accident at work and I need to go to the hospital.
He works up in Michigan at a Nuclear Plant and I figured they don't just call you for a piece of metal in the nail bed and figure things are not looking good. So I grab my Reo Woodvils, extra cartos, joose batteries, chargers, books, hair and tooth brush and run out the door. Our adult children were at the house and they drove me the 60 miles to the hospital.
My husband was moving a 21" od pipe on pipe stands when the front pipe stand fell (no weight from the pipe on it) out. It smashed and partially amputated his thumb. He had 1/8" piece of skin holding his thumb to his hand. The hospital in Michigan could do nothing for him, so they sent him to University of Chicago Hospitals. Which we had to drive, was only an hour and a half drive from Michigan.
So now in Chicago, they get him into ER and find that all nerve, tendons and arteries are severed as well and his bone. The first joint is gone. However, that 1/8" of skin that is holding his thumb to his hand has a feeder artery, a small vein connected to the main artery below the amputation site, feeding his amputated thumb and keeping it a live. It cooled down, but never died. 9 hours later hes in surgery.
They were able to save one main artery, and both nerves. His joint was smashed beyond repair, so they pinned his thumb at a slight angle so his thumb will still help in gripping things. His tendons were pinned at this point also, since they are still needed in the lower joint. He lost one artery too damaged to save.
He was in surgery for 7.5 hours and spent 4 days in ICU. He is now in a regular floor. Time will tell how much use he will get out of his thumb.
The good news out of all this, it so could have been worse. It was just his thumb. And after 2 days of going outside, I was told I can use my Reos in the hospital. Oh yea, and I did this all with just my reos! No real smokes!!Go me!!!
We have a long road ahead of us. More surgeries to remove pins, therapy, more trips to Chicago hospital. Him off work for God only knows how long. But I now know that I don't need that 1 smoke a month. I am so done with those nasties.
Also, when I got home last nite, I found my 6V batteries in the mailbox. OMG I love it! Good bye 5v batts, (will still keep 3.7 with lr cause I like that too)
Thanks for listening about my bad weekend. I do indeed know it could have been alot worse. So we are very thankful for alot of different things!
