Correct, there should be nothing between the carto and the battery.
Unless you over fill the carto, you need not worry about fluid leaking into the battery.
If you are using a manual battery, they are sealed and cartos will not leak into the battery. If you are using an auto battery, you do need to be careful not to overfill your cartos because they will leak into an unsealed auto battery and destroy it.

So between the cartomizer and the battery there should be absolutely nothing right? No small rubber piece? How does it keep the juice from leaking into the battery?

If you ever take a carto apart, you will see why it doesn't leak into the battery. If you overfill/over saturate the filling material, it will go down the center hole and then into the battery.
