I live in CA and it's 2018 and for some unknown reason here in California are government without voter approval decided drinking anything stronger then 120 proof is a NO NO so this just happened a couple months ago all the vodka stronger then 120 proof was pulled off the shelves. Here is the problem, in order to clean a coil and actually get it clean you need at least 75% by vol alcohol which means you need 150 proof vodka or stronger well you can't get that here in the golden state anymore and I no you need 150 proof because I used it before and it works great and I've tried 120 proof and it doesn't work very good at all it hardly removes anything. So my dilemma is should I try 91% rubbing alcohol which is the strongest alcohol you can get for drinking or rubbing. What I would like to know is what's so dangerous about using it to clean coils. I know it will kill you if you drink it but I'm not drinking it, I'm cleaning a coil and rinsing most if not all of it off and out of the cotton

It should not be a problem to clean your rba with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol). Let it dry afterwards. Don't drink it. The lethal dose is around 250 ml.

Isopropyl alcohol should be safe for glass and metal. But I have no idea about the chemical resistance of the plastics used as insulators and o-rings. You'll need to look that up. Otherwise it may be best to remove them first.

If you have questions about chemical safety, then google "MSDS" (material safety data sheet) and the name of the chemical.

Personally, I wouldn't dry burn coils if you are concerned with health and safety. I use plain round wire 316L and it is cheap. And making a new simple wire coil won't take up any more time than cleaning an old one.

I believe I know some people (like, Kitty Dukakis) who drank a lot more of it than THAT (although perhaps not at one sitting) and not personally, like but I read her book.

I think starting a trend where all "serious" vapers build still is a great idea! LOL, at least in CA, where prohibition is sort of applied to so many things.... :)

Only downside is the stills are generally legal only for use in tinctures and water. Making alcohol requires a federal permit for spirits or fuel, neither are cheap. Probably would be easier/cheaper to just take a road trip to a neighbor state without the limit. Now of course check your local and state laws on importation size and legality first.

Wonder if I should warn my Kentucky cousins?

Maybe the warning against rubbing alc was because there is some with menthol or something? For sore muscles?

This might have been a warning here from way back when we were using atties with non removable wicks and we couldn't thoroughly disassemble for rinsing.

Maybe you are thinking of methanol which can cause blindness. Menthol is used in some eliquid. Ethanol is the alcohol we drink.
