The atomizers in my tanks are constantly letting me down. I really didn't want it to come to this.. but, I need to try building my own.

I was thinking hard a bout the Sophia but I just couldn't pull the trigger... still too fiddly. I'm hoping the Russian is easier.

Any advice? I seem to like about 1.8 oms, is Kanthal what I should be using? Also, wondering about hemp fiber wicking... thoughts?

Many Thank-You's, Cyn :):):)

I just ordered my first RBA too! Kayfun Lite+ on ebay...I'm in the same boat..frustrated with inconsistency of clearos (using the aspire bdc and nautilus but the heads are dodgy and at $2-$3 a pop I can no longer justify if I can learn to build myself). I bout 100ft of Kanthal from ebay for $7.99 (Kanthal A1 Wire 28 Gauge 100 ft 0 61oz Resistance Resistor AWG A 1 | eBay) and going to pick up some organic cotton balls this week. Good luck, and hope we both can conquer the RBA's!

Had mine for 3 weeks now and I have no regrets. So far I've used 30ga Kanthal coiled on a #46 drill bit 7/8 turns. It comes out around 1.7 - 1.8 Ω. Tried silica and cotton wicks. I never thought I'd start to use cotton because I didn't want the "hassle" of the constant changing. To my surprise I loved the flavor and wicking of the cotton and have not had to change as frequently as thought. Since I'm changing flavors constantly, I have been changing the cotton, but I stuck with one flavor for 5 - 6 days and the wick was in dandy condition -- YMMV.
The one little mini-disaster occurred when I laid my mod and Russian on its' side when the atomizer was nearing time to refill. I had maybe a ml of juice leak out through the air hole. I later read that you can break the vacuum when the tank is low by exposing one of the juice channels to air. Just a heads up.
This device has been one of those "direction altering" moments for me. I can't get over how much easier the Russian is to coil / wick and how great the flavor is. I have noticed that I use more juice now but since I DIY, I am not worried.
Hope this helps......

I am currently using a 32 gauge dual coil. I have used 30 gauge for a micro coil and 32 gauge twisted micro coils. 28 gauge is a standard for most. It really is a personalized touch. You just need to find what really works best for you. Either way I am sure you will love the vape you get out of it.

At what gauge does the Kanthal become micro coil, and do I need to make a dual coil? Twisted micro coil  .. may be awhile before I tackle that one. :?:

A micro coil is not a reference to the size of the wire itself. It is simply a coil that is wrapped as tightly as possible together. Basically the coils should be touching one another. You do not need to make a dual coil, in fact I would suggest making just single coils until you become more comfortable with building. I would highly suggest going to youtube.com and watching some videos on coiling. I personally like the channels Pbusardo and Riptrippers. Just type that into the search bar and you will find their channels. Riptrippers has a lot of building videos and a couple specifically for the Kayfun Lite or Russian 91%

It's the size of the wrap that makes it a micro. Usually wrapped around a 1/16 or 5/64" drill bit or equivalent as tight as possible with no air gaps between each wrap. I wrap it really tight, mount the coil in my atty then pulse and compress the coils to get them all nice and even and glowing from the inside out. Rip trippers does so many videos on micros I'm sure you could find a few to get the hang of it pretty quick.

Just do coil wrapping on a single coil for now. Don't worry about super tight perfection, just get the hang of things. Learn about where the coil shouldn't touch for shorts, and don't twist your cotton too tight in the coil, it swells with saturation. Small tips and tricks and practice is all you need.

*also I have not tried hemp wicking, but I have been meaning to. I read with a hemp wick it has great flavor and once you use it for days or w/e you can just take it out wash under water and let it dry and reuse with no problem s or worry about it holding flavor. Sounds neat but I don't know what size of hemp to use or anything. So I just threw this in. Might be worth researching or testing out. I'll update this if I can find some later today.

I thought in vaping that the term micro coil was used when making a coil where each turn touches and it heats from the inside out. Did I get that wrong?

Are your coils tightly wrapped (micro ? ) or, more evenly spaced? Thanks for the heads up BTW too

You are correct about all the coils touching but micro coils also have a size requirement. Usually to be considered a micro coil it is 1/16" or smaller. Nano coils also have a size requirement but I cannot remember the number at this time.

I love my R91 but found the initial setup difficult even though I had a Kayfun before the Russian.

The center pin was stuck in the center tube which caused the deck to be loose and the screws seem smaller than my Kayfun.

I use a 1.5 microcoil with cotton and honestly feel there is no better vape for me.

In my own use of the Russia 91% I think the biggest issues for me were that the build block has a tendency to spin and it has a dual center pin. The Kayfun Lite has a single center post that is used to hold the build block in place as well as adjust the connection to your mod. The Russian 91% has a post and a screw in the center. I would recommend removing the center screw (this is the connection adjustment) and tightening down the center post (while holding the blocks in alignment with a pair of vice grips) as to eliminate build block spinning. Then replace the adjustable connection screw. My center adjustment screw is a bit loose so whenever I screw it into a device it twists in a bit.

Just some stuff to look out for.

I have watched a few coil building video's, Rip Tripper and PBusardo both come to mind. I don't recall the difference between building one kind of coil wrap to another... or how to get to a certain OHM. :p

I tend to go with PBusardo's videos. He doesn't get into any real crazy coils, mainly just those that work well. Except that one time he put a quad micro coil on a Helios dripper...

As far as how to get a certain resistance coil a lot of that comes with practice. If I'm using a 1/16" drill bit as a template with 28G Kanthal, a 9 wrap gets me a ~1.25ohm coil. An 8 wrap will come in around ~1.13ohms. Ohm meters are your friend.
