Have read numerous conflicting posts and articles and remain confused.
Is a name brand protected battery safe to use, or is use of an unprotected battery w/ kick safer?
I have also read conflicting information on IMR vs protected batteries.

What is the safest battery to use in my specific low wattage setup?

I think the only difference between a protected battery and an unprotected battery is one has a fuse (circuit I think) and one doesn't, with the fuse adding a bit more length to the battery. Here are some links from our resident battery guy, @Mooch, that may help you. I use a Samsung 40T 21700 in my semi-mechs (regs with a bypass mode), and an LG model something (unremembered at this point) 18500 in my mech. The coils I mostly use are slightly below and/or pretty much equal in resistance to what you mentioned. I just checked on one of my regs (that has a bypass mode) and a 1.85 ohm coil at 8 watts is in the 4 volt ballpark.

I'm not sure what a battery with kick is.

The first thing you'll have to do is test that Kick and make sure it really is able to protect you, but this could prove to be a dangerous task. In other words, you have to prove that your Kick's fuse function even works first. Until you do that, the the question cannot be answered, so I would assume that a reputable brand protected battery will be a better bet if I were in your shoes.

I bought several of these some time ago by mistake and was wondering.
