Salts or Freebase DIY Juice ?

I have been making my own e-cig juice for about the last 8 years. I have always used your standard 100 mg freebase nicotine (PG) base when making my juice.

I usually make the completed juice 45% PG / 55% VG and 15 mg nicotine strength ... Then 'Tootle Puffing' it with an old Kayfun Lite Plus V2 at 10.5 watts.
_______________

My questions:

1. Is there any benefit switching from freebase nic to 'salt' nic? (I would still make the completed juice 15 mg strength just like I did when using freebase nic base).

2. Would inhaling this 15 mg nic salt juice be a little less 'harsh' without as much 'throat hit' as when made with 15 mg nic freebase juice?

I ask that last question mainly because my son in law still smokes cigarettes ... I had him try some of my DIY juice made with the freebase nic, but he coughs too much while trying to inhale it. I am thinking that maybe 15 mg nic salt juice would be less harsh and maybe he wouldn't have this coughing problem.

Thanks,
Ron

I let a few people 'sample' my eGo/CE4 vape when I first switched. All 3 or 4 of them are smokers and also had the same reaction as your son in law. BTW, know the difference between in-laws and outlaws? I was vaping a retail juice at 21mg/ml with a 50/50 ratio. I then got some 3mg/ml base (same PG/VG ratio) and gave that to the only person willing to try this again. She still coughed. This was before salts and I have been somewhat tempted to try again, with salts instead of freebase, as I believe your second question and the statement that follows might be a worthwhile solution. Outlaws are wanted.

Frankly, I'd start them on %100VG/0MG and see their reaction. Then move up from there.

Personally I started with 50/50 PG/VG and 18MG 'freebase' (there were no 'salts' back then) and the first few hits in the AM I would still have to be careful with.

Some will react negatively to the PG and most will react to the non-salts nicotine. Switching to Salts base and/or lowering the nicotine MG can help along with lowering the PG %.

While I can vape much higher MG with salts than with freebase, doing so just uses up my stash faster.

The only real difference between freebase & salts is the lack of TH with salts. Everyone coughs until they "learn" how to inhale vapor. Remind them with vapor all nic is more readily absorbed through mucus membranes in the mouth & sinus so they don't actually need inhale to absorb the nic. Tell them to hold the vapor in their mouth a moment and exhale through the nose for several days while they get the hang of inhaling.

Thanks everyone for the replies ... I think I am going to get a bottle of Nic Salts Base and make some 18 mg nic juice and see if my son in law can vape it. If he still can't vape, I will just make juice for myself with it.

I might even like my own DIY juice made with nic salts base better than what I make using freebase nic base.

Does the nic salts base cost much more than the regular nic freebase base (same nic level) ?

IMHO High Nic Salts around 50mg gives him a shot of Nicotine more similar or extreme than a cigarette.
I'd just start him off on a Vuse or Leap and let him switch to a refillable device for economy sake.
btw I used to be a hobbiest and now I vape 50% Nic Salt Liquid.
Much less often and much shorter sessions. Just 1 or two inhales is enough.

Or I'd give him a 50mg Salt Nic Liquid and have him vape on a 12Watt device.
Something braindead simple like a Joyetech WideWick Air or a Geekvape Aegis AP2. Widewick is available for under $10.00 online and is a solid unit for vaping 50mg.

One other thought, he may be reacting to the PG in the liquid.
For many people PG is rough on the lungs and many are allergic to it too.

I was vaping inside and my wife got angry
because the 2nd Hand vape irritated her throat. Switched back to my 100% Vg liquid and no complaints.
Eventually You might want to try him on a 100% VG liquid cut with water, Vodka or ethanol.

I believe salt nic is easier on my sinuses. It still is overwhelming in the strengths common now, I use 3-4 mg for my Caliburn and .7 for the dripper.

50 mg is 5%. 50% nicotine is death, unless you mean diluting the eliquid halfway, most of the commercial stuff would be less overflavored that way.
