So I'm sitting here happily vaping away, and on comes a commercial for Chantix. With all that I've heard about the efforts of the FDA (USA) and HC (Canada) and various government levels/agencies to throw down speed bumps on approving ecigs, nic liquid, etc and the various stories being floated out by "unknown sources" (see FDA/HC above) about how dangerous ecigs/nicotine is...this makes me literally laugh out loud.

Chantix: Big Pharm/FDA approved. Helps you quit smoking (cuz that's what BP and FDA/Gov't wants *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*). But, known side affects are: suicidal thoughts, heart attacks, blood clots, etc, etc, etc.

vaping: Smokers looking to quit approved, with success stories galore. No proof nor logical argument of health risks. And last I checked in my time on ECF...no suicidal tendencies, heart attacks, homicidal tendencies, etc, etc.

Logical solution: Market and promote Chantix. Ban PV/ecigs and nic liquid.

I've never seen such a blatant example of back room dealings, pocket lining, talking out of both sides of the face, blowing smoke (not vaper) up people's A$$es, as this. I sense a big battle is brewing and I absolutely sign up for the fight.

On a side note: Did anyone see Saturday Night Live's skit on Chantix? OMG...so hilarious! If you haven't seen it, google it or find it on YouTube. Too funny!

I just can't get out of my head the C-Span video footage of John Boehner, when he was minority leader, walking around the floor of the House, passing out checks from the Tobacco lobby. Right in front of God and everybody.
Or Billy Taubin, changing the Medicare prescription bill at the last second to prohibit negotiation (like the VA does) on drug prices. Then, two years later, becoming head lobbyist for PHARMA.

What chance do we have against that?

I just watched the SNL Chantix spoof...except that it isn't far from the truth in my experience. The only difference was that the "mild nausea" was actually more of a constant esophagus burning boil that never went away no matter how many tums or prevacid you take. It is evil. I didn't tell my wife till today what it was doing to my head, and even then not the full extent. I may just keep that between ECF and myself...

I totally agree with the lets market chantix and ban PV argument. Its redonkulus. BUT Chantix DID work for me. It helped me quit initially, but once you're off of it its all you. So yea, doesn't work in that aspect but wanted to point out it does help some people put it down to begin with. Most medicine have awful potential side effects. I do know a number of people who couldn't take chantix because of the psychological effects, so Its not a good example......but wanted to point out that if even one person who takes part in the clinical trials has a "side effect" from the drug it has to be listed. People get "side effects" from placebo studies, too.

But yea, they need to get their heads out of their asses, i agree.

Agreed, xhaler...

Not to stick up for the FDA or BP, but I wonder how many of Chantix' side effects are really due to the drug and not just quitting smoking in general... Depression to varying levels is a fairly common side effect when quitting. If the depression is bad enough, one might contemplate some very disturbing things.

Excellent post! I, for one, am utterly terrified of Chantix and two of my doctors tried to push it on me. My Orthopedic surgeon and my Neurosurgeon. (I was in a very bad car wreck a year ago and broke several ribs, my sternum, and had back fractures and herniated disks due to the accident as well). Anyway, both doctors told me repeatedly that smoking increases inflammation so, it would be best for me to get off of the coffin nails. While I agreed that smoking is terrible, and I did cut down on smoking, I was not willing to take Chantix to do it. I already was/am suffering from severe depression, (who wouldn't after losing their job and then winding up in constant severe pain after being rear-ended and likely now being permanently disabled at age 49??). Anyway, I was already on anti-depressants for the depression and frequent suicidal thoughts and these guys wanted to make it worse with Chantix? NO THANK YOU.

Oh well, I found the wonderful world of vaping about 5 weeks ago, and have managed to drop my analog consumption down to less than a pack a week now - from a 2PAD habit. Soon, I hope to be at zero analog consumption. All WITHOUT the dubious assistance of Chantix.

I would say chances are 80% of an increase in depression after starting Chantix is because of the drug. At least that's what happened to my mother who had to stop taking Chantix when she tried it a couple years back because the depression it caused was that bad. Also based on other user's stories about it... Just a guess...

I'm defiantly with you though xhaler. If each and everyone of us just writes 10 letters to our senators and a few others across the country about protecting the right to vape, that lives are the line, and we know what the FDA is up to I like to think we can change things. Our politics assume and its so overwhelming obvious that they think Americans are simply stupid but those days are coming to an end. People are waking up, more and more every single day.

well, I usually hate these commercials because they scare my patients away from trying meds that have very few side effects. the companies do have to list all possible side effects, no matter how remote. The commercials seem to have the opposite effect than intended, where people are then afraid of trying the drug rather than going to their doctor and saying "I have to have this med".

Chantix, though, is one that I wouldn't try myself, never mind prescribe it for someone else.

There's many examples of faulty thinking on the part of the FDA....

edit: found this http://chantixlawsuits.blogspot.com/2011/06/chantix-shown-to-have-consistent-link.html

note this part...
"but the violent urges tended to be most powerful when users first start taking the drug; often before they had gotten to the point in their Chantix use where they had stopped smoking. Researchers found that violent and aggressive behavior ended for 93% of the subjects when they stopped taking Chantix. "

kind of leads one t say its the Chantix

California: But stuck in Afghan!
When i got prescribed chantix i was told it "releases dopamine and almost guaranteed sexual dreams" but no, i just kept dreaming about me being killed by things vivid to the point where i wouldnt sleep any more..and that was on the week 1 half dosage.

The real side effects should list:
-You definitely wont sleep
-it F*s up your brain for a little
-you might kill people

I went back to smoking because i felt chantix was far less healthy than tobacco itself. At least mentally..but i value mental condition more than physical.
