Over There
Several sites are now asking for a copy of your ID.
I just left a site that asked for the front and back of it. I strongly disagree with this policy. I understand that they require age verification, no problem. However what would your reaction be if a when buying a six pack or a drink in a bar you were required to allow them to make a copy of your I'D?
Is everyone on the vendor's staff bonded and insured? Have they done a criminal background check? Who has access to their files? May I see both prior to providing my I'D copy? Are they over reacting or crazy?

No, it's not some government wiener is trying to keep evil tobacco oh of children's hands. It is widely known the regulations were sponsored by big tobacco.
Ok, no problem I will show you my I'D. Show, like in any place required to "see" (not have to keep) my I'D.

I spent a good amount of money at one of my favorite online vendors. Tried to make another order when all this hit and it wouldn't go through without my license and last 4 SS digits. I called to see if there was any give in those requirements and was given a flat out NO! I have credit cards with issue dates before the owners were born and that should be enough proof that I am over 18.

They obviously don't need or want me as a customer and I have found I don't need them for my vaping supplies, so I guess we are both happy.

I feel the same.
I refuse to even take a "selfie ".
The word just seems so wrong!

no vendor is going to get SS number even if it is the last 4 digits that is going over the line.
I've always found that odd. "Prove to me you're really John by telling me his secret code that only John will know. I'll know if you're lying, because I know John's code, too. But if you tell me John's code, I'll know you're him because nobody can know it but him. And me. And everyone else he's told it to to prove he's really him and not someone else. Somehow I'll know you're not one of them just telling me you're John and using his code because he told it to you earlier. It's super-secret, you couldn't know it. You must be him."

I've not been asked for my DL but one wanted my cell phone number so they could send me a text  I don't give that number out ..... ever...... Needless to say, but I will :D I didn't follow through with that order. Fortunately it was a want kinda thing, not a need.

That's pretty much what happens every time I go to an ATM. Would you want an ATM to spit out money if someone just sticks your bank card in without some method of the bank knowing it's really you?

A text to your phone is becoming a standard 2 factor authentication technique. Even Gmail provides an option to use that so you have to be in possession of your phone and enter the number they send to to assure it's really you. It's a bit harder to change someone's password if you also need to be in possession of their phone (and we generally are really compulsive about knowing where your phone is at any time).

There was a lot of confusion and different methods for small vendors to enact to be in compliance with the new regulations. Some turned to outside, third party verification services which all had slightly varying requirements. Some of those services did require the last 4 digits of your SS number and some didn't. And if properly implemented when that info was captured and sent to the service it never actually went to the vendor at all.

Some small vendors who didn't want to go through the expense of that (or couldn't afford to set it up) and required stuff like a selfie with your photo ID which would make it look like they did what was necessary, but let's face it, anything can be doctored and faked. Some will only ship with an adult signature required on delivery.

Best way to handle it is only use vendors which uses verification setups you are comfortable with.

Just to play devil's advocate, when purchasing with a credit card, you will only put in the expiration date, and not the date the card was issued.......how would the vendor know the issue date to use as proof that you are over 18?

I understand that but since I don't give out that number to anyone but some family member and a few close friends it was a total no go for me. I am trying my best to keep the spam calls to a minimum.
