If a company takes that route, that tells me two things.

One, they're really not that concerned about a user's privacy.
Two, they're taking the cheap way out instead of paying for a service that does it automatically when a customer places an order.

If I talk to a company and I hear "Oh gee! We didn't know there were online age verification services!", I flee.

No offense, but, some of us aren't as grumpy as you :)

There is absolutely on excuse for companies to take the cheap route when it comes to user privacy. Asking a complete stranger to send in a copy of something that could easily be used to then steal your identify just should not be done. What do they do with the copy once it's received? File it? Throw it in the trash? Destroy it? Who has access to it? Have the individuals who have access been vetted to ensure the safety of your privacy?

No. Absolutely not. Online companies should not be asking for a copy of your license. It's an unacceptable method of verification.

I made an order last week and they only asked for verification after the sale through email. They required a driver's license selfie and filling out a form. I cancelled the order and told them there are plenty of vendors who don't require that. They confirmed my info through my order and waived the need for the license/selfie. I won't do it and obviously it's not required and over the top .... ridiculous

There are circumstances when even a third party verification service requires additional information. The last 4 digits of your SS# is one way. If you recently moved your public records that these verification services use might not reflect that and considered out of date, and they want an additional piece of ID in follow up.

I'm not sure where the resistance to a copy of your driver's license is such an issue over concern of loss of privacy, especially if you black out the license number. The vendor already has your address, so you're not giving up any secrets with that, and you are giving them your CC number with expiration and CVV. I worry more about my CC info. There's not much anyone can do with an incomplete driver's license.

Why should the customer jump through hoops when it's not necessary, and obviously it wasn't necessary as they verified me without it. There may be circumstances where it is but to make everyone do it for the exceptions is over the top. I'm not typically concerned with my privacy and my CC info is way more important. I watch it closely. Maybe I'm just anti-selfie and anti-putting forth an effort I don't have to. :)

Mail order is a blind transaction and in states where there's an age limit for buying vape products there has to be some way to verify that. I understand that they are trying to comply with state laws. Any kid can order using dad's credit card if he's smart enough to get it right. The problem is that they can never be sure that a child isn't using the credit card and presenting ID as an adult. The FDA is monitoring age verification according to this Vaping360 article.

Not going to happen, when I shop I pay for convenience and the product. There are service providers that can do this for the vendors and also cover them in case of inquiry from the FDA. If I send them a photo I assume it's being kept on file to prove compliance in that situation which is a double no-go.
