Another NEWBIE question!!!

Ok so I know through my almost 50 years on this planet that manufacturers exaggerate their products. What I am trying to figure out is how often and amount of products I need to buy. For example, the filters can be reused approximately how many times? How many drops of juice does it take to fill a filter? (I read on a site somewhere that it is about 20 drops) read on one site that 30ml is 600 drops, sound reasonable?

How many refills of juice and filters would actually equal a pack of analogs. I have already purchased my joye eGO just waiting for it to arrive so I am already commited to my cause! haha

But just don't want to run out of juice or filters and end up buying a pack of butts.

Second Part of question. Mixing flavors. Lets say for the sake of arguement I put in ten drops of chocolate and 10 drops of bananna. In theory I should end of with a flavor of chocolate covered bananna. Right? Of course the numbers may change according to taste, 15 bananna 5 chocolate?

Once I were to come up with a mixture I like, would you recommend getting an empty bottle and mixing up a batch just for that? Or mix it together each time on the filter?

Sorry for the MANY MANY newbie questions. But I am really getting into this, and I haven't even got my ecig yet! hahahaha

Hello Scotsman. I'm kinda in the same boat, just got into myself. I got almost everything for DIY mixing, and while I'm waiting for my 510 to get here, starting experimenting with it. I was using a gas station cheapo till it burned out on me, but a taste of a few flavors, except my mixing wasn't great. There are a few mixing calculators online you can check out that may help. So far I have only tried a couple of flavors, one was like a mounds, choc a coconut, but it was a bit weak, more coconut than choc, but I'm still experimenting :). There are a lot more experts out there that will prob give you better answers, but I hope this is a start for you,

How many drops does it take to fill a filter?
-This depends on what you are using exactly. Some of the smaller carts and cartos take less than a ml. Maybe about 20 drops or so. I use 3 ml cartos that take ~100 drops. It also depends on the volume of your 'drops'. Not all drops are equal, and this can vary based on the dropper and the viscosity of the liquid.

How many refills of juice equal a pack of cigarettes?
-This also depends on a lot of variables. The standard average vaped/day around here seems to be 3-4 mls. You may vape more or less than that.

Mixing flavors?
Sure, you can mix them. No problem. I'd recommend mixing in some sort of container, then loading the cart/carto. If you try to mix in the filler (assuming you are using something with a filler/batting) then your flavors are not going to get mixed well. That can be interesting as well, but for consistent flavor mix in another container.

Also, check out the DIY forum on these boards. Lots of information about making your own mixes which can be fun and can save you money (eventually).

Hey Evil,

The vets here are very patient - I was like you when I started asking alot of questions. I'm about 6 weeks in and my advice, as someone told me when I started, is that things will make a little more sense when you get the device in your hand, start filling cartridges and cartomizers, see the juice, etc. A lot is going to depend on how much you vape and other factors that we really can't determine. I placed 3-4 juice orders from vendors when I started, and have placed several more not because I've even come close to running out but because I LOVE sampling flavors. My only advice is once you get it in your hand and know or have a good idea that you like doing it, order spare everything, and quickly. Also, pick up some cartomizers (cartridge and atomizer in one) - it has been the easiest for me and that seems to be a common sentiment around here.

Others will be able to help you with you DIY questions.

Regard

I'm still somewhat new to this as well (3 weeks in). For me, 3 drops = one cigarette. There are 20 drops in a ML, therefore 3 ML = 1 pack (or one day for me as a former pack-a-day smoker). This math tends to hold up for me no matter what method I use. For dripping, obviously I just drop in 3 drops and get the equivalent of a single analog (8-10 good drags). For a cartridge, I can usually get about 8-10 drops in and it lasts 3 smoke breaks at work. For a cartomizer, I go with about 30 drops and it will last about half a day.

For flavors, I don't really try to create brand-new ones, but modify existing ones. For example, early on I bought a big bottle of Johnson Creek tobacco juice, which got great reviews. I found it overly harsh, but cut in about 10% of a light Green Apple flavor which improved it immensely.

Balth, I will look for those calculators! Thanks for the time, and I have to tell you Mounds/Almond Joy flavor SOUND GREAT! WHEN you get it perfected you have to give me the recipe! I was going to buy the njoy at the local gas station, but was warned it would not be what I wanted. So I figured why waste the 20 bucks and just jump right in with both feet! HOPEFULLY this works for me!

Jerkwater, that is basically what I am looking to do is combine/mix existing flavors. Dont have the time for much more than that right now. MAY change in the future, but I think I will be content just mixing premade flavors. I am smoking about 1.5 packs a day and recently it have been creeping up to almost 2 packs a day, or damn close to it! That is the main reason I am trying to quit. Thanks for your math!

1 - the amount of juice YOU use to equal a pack of smokes is dependent on you. Measure how much YOU use. Try vaping from a single 5ml bottle for a couple of days and see how much you go through.

Filters - you mean the cartridges that stick on the atomizer? Few people use those except to learn to vape. And you never have to buy more - they can be washed, restuffed with precut blue foam from strictlyejuice.com (search there for foam) and reused many times.

Most people use cartomizers which hold 1ml or more and the most popular are Boge. You can't vape them dry or they will singe and ruin the flavor of that cartomizer, adding a bitter taste. I can get 10+ days use out of a Boge 3 ohm (standard resistance) cartomizer using thin clear juices, PG w/ 20% or less VG, and I avoid juices that drop a lot of flavoring sediment in the stuffing. You could carry 2-3 filled ones and top them off at home. I top off during the day at work. If I vape 2 cartos I may need to top top one or both off once at work. Cartos provide more consistent vaping, should vape longer without needing filling, but you do have to keep them damp and they have limited lives. I can get 7-10 days use out of one carto. they cost about $2 apiece. Keep your favorite flavors separate, no atomizer to clean, but a bit of a learning curve. I fill them with 18 drops slowly while holding tissue on the threaded end hole, wait, add a few more - whatever it will soak up easily, then I clean it up, then I lay it on different sides for 15-20 minutes after that first fill so every bit of stuffing gets damp. While vaping, I add juice if the flavor or vapor is not right or if the carto get unusually warm or if I look at the top of the stuffing and see it could use some.

2 - If you are asking about mixing eliquids (not flavorings for making eliquids) - yes you can mix eliquids w/ each other any way you want. Sure - you could mix up a bottle. I do that when I am fixing flavors - like if a liquid is too thick for cartos I mix it with a thinner liquid, it a fruit eliquid is overflavored I make a bottle of it mixed w/ a sweet vanilla, etc. But when I play with mixtures on the fly, I do it in the cart or carto. I used to carry one tobacco juice and two flavoring juices and play with the flavor all day.

If I ever get it perfected, I will definitely give you the recipe. I'm waiting (not too patiently LOL) for my 510 to get here, so I can experiment some more. At least it's not too expensive to do, walmart sells VG for about $2.50 for 177 ml, and all you need is choc and coconut flavorings, and distilled water to thin it a little, I am trying 80VG/20 water. I just need to get the right percentages for the flavors. Will keep you posted.

What is the VG you can buy at Walmart? And what do you use for flavoring? extracts like baking? Wow I am so new! I really need to research more! AND this is WHAT I do for a living! hahaha

VG= vegetable glycerine. Walmart has the Humco brand, and as long as it says USP it's fine to use. There are various flavor vendors. I use Loranne Oils (because I can get them locally) and The Perfumer's Apprentice (online) because they are the first non-local vendor I tried and I like the flavors available (good prices and shipping as well).

PG- propylene glycol can be found at a Tractor Supply store (again USP grade) or ordered online.

Check out the DIY board for more information and ideas!

Th e VG from walmart's brand is Humco, someone here suggested it. I found it in the beauty section, it's used as a skin protectant, but it's the same thing you find online. I researched it a lot before I got it. For my first testing I got my flavoring from walmart also. You don't want any with oils or sugar, and I'm sure the ones you get from e-cig vendors are better, but on limited budget, it worked for me.

Hey Scotsman,

You're answers have already been given, so I'll deal with the DIY questions. DIY can be an extremely effective way to try lots of different things, save money, and cater to your own specific tastes. It can also be a little daunting at first. The ejuicemeup calculator can be had for free...just google it. It will allow you to specify exactly what amount of juice you want to make, the PG/VG ratio, and the nicotine level you want to end up with.

I highly recommend you NOT start with more than 60 mg/ml nic though as it is VERY hazardous in concentrations over that. Also be careful with flavorings, as some are not vapable. I concur with others though. Do your homework FIRST! Get over to the DIY section and read up. When you're done...read up again, then again. Give it a shot! I don't buy juice anymore.

Yeah, that is what I am doing. My base juice is two different tobacco juices and I have found that I like it enhanced with cappuccino, coffee, irish creme and amaretto so far (plan on trying some more also). I liked these with my analogs and coffee, so mixing them made sense and it works for me.

Stepping into DIY now.
