Hi guys, first of all I'm pretty much a newb at vaping, but I've read as much as I could so far. I have a TFV4 tank (+Xcube2) and went through the triple & quad coils at around 95W which was superb.

I went on to the single coil RBA and tried my best building coils which look crappy honestly. But my first successful build using Kanthal 28, around 6 wraps, 3mm diameter, resulted in a really high resistance at 1.5+ ohms. The max I could vape on this was 30W (before tasting burnt stuff), and I realised that I could no longer taste the flavor of my juice compared to when I was at 90+W on the triple and quad coils.

Is the solution to this going lower resistance and subsequently higher wattage? I'm trying to hit 0.5ohms but it seems that with 28 kanthal it's pretty impossible. I used the online coil calculator and I probably need 2 wraps to achieve that, which seems ridiculous. Should I get other gauges of wires? Maybe 24? From what I've read, they seem really thick and hard to handle.

Looking forward to any advice! Thanks and have a great weekend!

I don't have that tank, but from what I've seen it needs a big, hot build to work with the high volume of airflow.

You could switch to Nichrome 80 wire. It's much lower in resistance. Some folks claim they get a metallic taste from it, but I have never tasted it. I use 24G in a lot of my builds. It's not hard to work with.

You could try a parallel build to reduce resistance and get more surface area. (The sextuple coils for that tank are 3 - 2 strand parallel coils.) A 7 wrap 3 strand parallel with 28G kanthal is around .5 ohms. Not sure how much space is in that base though. May be too wide.

With 28G Kanthal, you won't be able to crank up the power much over 50W or so. If you really want to throw 90 - 100W at it, you will need the larger gauge wire, but you can get a satisfying vape at lower wattage with smaller wire and lots of wraps.

Use 24g kanthal with higher wattage tanks and devices when doing one-wire single coils. Three full, spaced wraps on the TFV4 should equal exactly .5ohms, or really close to it. Use the Steam Engine tool, it's the best.

You probably blew out your 28g coil too soon due to high wattage, it can't handle that kind of strain and heat. Thus the dry hits.

Larger gauge wire can withstand higher temperatures and last longer.

Just because you can, doesn't always mean you should. I doubt you can put a build on that build deck that would go to 90 watts comfortably. That being said, 24 gauge with 4 or 5 wraps should be low enough that you could probably generate the same cloud under 50 watts. It'll save you battery life and be just as satisfying. I can blow "competition" level clouds with only 50 watts on my Velocity with a 26 gauge dual coil that comes in at .75 ohms (that's about 10 wraps on 3mm each). Lots of coil surface plus plenty of air equals lots of cloud and flavor.
