I'm writing a research paper on e-cigs and I'm shocked at the misconceptions all over the net. If they were called something else instead of electronic cigarettes, we wouldn't have all the ANTZ screaming to ban them.

I guess this means it's up to each and every one of us to become knowledgeable and educate the general public.

i agree that the term "e cigs" creates an immediate. negative impression for a lot of people. just the word cigarette implies dirty dangerous and un-healthy.

i always introduce mine as a vaporizer "an alternative to smoking". so far i get nothing but support from my non-smoker friends and colleagues.

good luck on your research.

The reason they are called e-cigs because some of them look like cigarettes, and Personal Vaporizer Nicotine Delivery Device isn't as catchy...
I'm sure that someone'd still have an issue especially if they are taking money away from a large lobbying group (tobacco & Taxes) I'm still waiting for NYS to try and tax them.. becuase the nic is derived from tobacco and they want to tax tobacco.

"Misconceptions" is a major part of my research paper. Two of my favorite examples are quotes from Rachael Ray, "I don't want to touch the thing" as she picked one up and later said, "if you are going to just puff on a bunch of chemicals, go ahead and have the cigarette." Just shows how people believe an electronic cigarette is the same as a regular cigarette except it activates electronically instead of by combustion.

The antifreeze argument was the most difficult until I found the information contrasting diethylene glycol and propylene glycol. Just saying, "propylene glycol is not antifreeze" is a false statement by itself. Saying propylene glycol is the safer replacement of diethylene glycol in antifreeze is more correct. One causes brain damage, the other has been used in asthma inhalers since the 1950's.

P.S. Does anyone use Polyethylene Glycol 400 (PG400) as a base?

...

I don’t see how you can make a Blanket Statement like this.

Perhaps it is an Irony, but the Idea that a Different Name would Somehow alleviate indoor bans can be considered a Misconception.

Trust me, the ANTZ would be screaming no matter what we call them.

The first kind of ANTZ is a prohibitionist who believes nicotine is an evil vice that must be eliminated from the face of the earth.
The second kind of ANTZ is in reality a paid lobbyist, funded by Big Pharma to stop electronic cigarettes in any way possible.

Neither of these groups of ANTZ care in the least what we call them.

I will definitely admit, though, that it might be less easy for them to fool the public with their lies if we called them something different.
The public hears "cigarette" and is already mentally prepared to accept anything bad that anyone says about them.

Yes, your are correct. Bad choice of words. I should've said, "If they were called Vaporizers instead of electronic cigarettes, less people would have preconceived ideas about the technology."

...and from what I've seen (granted, I'm new to this) groups are not just trying to ban indoors, they're trying to ban electronic cigarettes in parks, cities, and even countries (like Canada & Australia).

But is this even true?

Words conveys a Meaning to a person who hears the Word based on their Experiences. And sometimes this is Not Necessarily the Meaning the person who spoke the Word wanted to Convey.

To me ( being Older than some ) when I hear the word Vaporizer, I think of a machine the size of a Toaster that emits Steam. Something that people used to put a Wet Towel over and Inhaled along with Vicks Vape-O Rub when they had a Cold. That or something they used to Loosen Wallpaper with.

But perhaps to someone of a Younger generation, it might bring to mind something used to Ingest certain Illegal Botanical Herbs that we are Not allow to discuss here.

Some can make a Very Valid Argument that associating e-Cigarettes to an Illegal or Illicit Drug may be Far More Damaging that referring to them as an "e-Cigarette".

Can a Thought or Concept be Removed by just Removing a Word? Have you ever read Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 be any chance?

OMG. I've been trying to remember that title for over a month. I erroneously associated that title with 1984 and Big Brother. Thank you.

In regards to the rest of your comments, I obviously have no idea how to convey my thoughts effectively (glad you're not my English Comp professor). Must be my advanced years catching up with me or lack of sleep.

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant. [Robert McCloskey]

1984 was done by Orwell which is Another Classic work. As well as "Animal Farm".

Conveying thoughts can be Extremely Difficult in Speech. And 10 Times Worse in Text.

Text has No Voice Inflections and the Reader has No Visual Facial or Body Cues. With the possible Exception of what appears to be a mis-typed Capitalized Word or Bold Lettering.

I think you will do Fine on your paper. Just try to Remove yourself from it and try to Envision how other’s will Perceive the words you chose as Concepts or Grammatical Adjectives you use.

Unfortunately, 'vaporizers' are notorious here in Vancouver BC, as a delivery device for inhaling ... from ......... (which is what I assume recidivus is implying). So I must respectfully disagree that using that term would give a more appropriate conveyance of it's uses and benefits. I agree there's a ton of misconception out there, but such is life in the west. Same with the benefits of using ........., and the detriments of using prescription pills. The sheeple are controlled by the media, and it's best not to get upset over it.

Didn't realize those terms would get censored... :(

Yep, Vancity. I've actually seen vapourizers built for it, look just like a bottom fed box mod.

No specific references allowed, dems the rules, I actually am unsure if our posts fall under the same 'brella. Needless to say, people generally don't seem interested enough to ask me what it is I'm doing. This city is also known for it's ability to seem socially distant, everyone walks eyes forward and uninterested in each other (generally speaking).

Our winters are mild but our people are cold.

LOL almost blew coffee out my nose. Well said, and unfortunately true. Beautiful city, but a sweeping attitude adjustment is needed. Either way, misconceptions abound - vaping is becoming more and more popular however, and with that will come a better awareness amongst our public. Hopefully.
