I've been vaping for three years or so and have always used pretty low end gear, i.e. Eleaf 40W iStick with a Kanger T3S non-rebuildable clearomizer. I vape as a cigarette substitute (kicked a 40-year tobacco habit with vapor), so I'm strictly a mouth-to-lung vaper and have always been satisfied with vaping as long as I got decent vapor, an easy draw and a good throat hit.

With the clearomizer I'm using, though, after about a week on one of the little replaceable 1.8-ohm coil units, the atomizer starts getting harder to draw and the amount of vapor begins to diminish, so I've been wondering if a more sophisticated tank (I don't drip) with a rebuildable coil would improve my vaping experience, but I have no idea how much hassle I'd be getting into with a rebuildable.

Assuming I could learn to build a working assembly (I assume "building" means wrapping new coils and replacing wicks...?), how long does a build last before it needs to be done again? How long does it take to do a rebuild? What other maintenance and upkeep chores am I looking at with a rebuildable? How 'bout battery life? Is a higher-end tank, maybe sub-ohm, with a single or dual coil going to deplete my battery a lot faster than the little off-the-shelf clearomizer I'm using? What kind of ongoing costs am I looking at with a rebuildable setup?

Finally, what do I gain with a rebuildable, or even a higher-end non-rebuildable tank, keeping in mind that my current low-end setup is adequately satisfying with a clean $4.00 tank and a new $1.00 coil.

Yes, I find I get a better vape from rebuildables. I can run then at higher watts, so I get a denser more satisfying vape.
I have no idea how much hassle I'd be getting into with a rebuildable.
It is more work, but it is like a hobby and can be fun/rewarding. You could get all the gear you need from a single site and after that, it is all up to you,
how long does a build last before it needs to be done again?
It depends on your juice and vaping style. Generally I find a coil last me a few months and wicks last andwhere from 2 weeks to a month.
How long does it take to do a rebuild?
about 2-5mins depending on the build.
What other maintenance and upkeep chores am I looking at with a rebuildable?
Just some cleaning and wick changing.
How 'bout battery life? Is a higher-end tank, maybe sub-ohm, with a single or dual coil going to deplete my battery a lot faster than the little off-the-shelf clearomizer I'm using?
It's all dependent on the watts you're running at, but a rebuildable will probably deplete your battery faster as you would probably want to run at higher watts. If you run it at the same watts it would be the same.
What kind of ongoing costs am I looking at with a rebuildable setup?
After the initial purchase their is no ongoing cost, wire and wick is cheap though you can get a lifetime supply of wick for $20 and kanthal is like $10 for 100 feet. The tools can be costly though and adds up, but you only need to buy them once.
Finally, what do I gain with a rebuildable, or even a higher-end non-rebuildable tank, keeping in mind that my current low-end setup is adequately satisfying with a clean $4.00 tank and a new $1.00 coil.
Gains with rebuildable for me is mostly being able to get a denser vape.

Sorry I can't be more detailed, but it is late and I am a bit drunk lol

Sounds like you want a Kayfun Lite+ V2. EHPro makes a nice clone of it that can be had for around $10 if you don't mind the rose gold version. If you want SS then you might not find it in stock anywhere for less than about $20. Great little tank atty, though. I had one given to me, then went out and bought two more.

My goodness friend. If you've got a T3S you've already got one of the easiest beginner rebuild-ables you'll ever find! That's almost all I use. The Evod, MT3, T3S, T3XL, ProTank and more all use that same VERY rebuildable coil that your throwing away.
The Evod generation clearos are horrid to rebuild. Much better to go with a dedicated rta or a subohm tank with a rba section, IMO.

It's definitely worth it to give rebuilding a try. From what you've been using it sounds like a Kayfun Mini v3 might be up your alley (clones can be had for around $10 - I haven't used one though, authentic or clone, so can't vouch for them). Your liquid consumption will probably go up a bit (so you might want to reduce your nic level a bit), but it's really dependent on your build and atomizer. With a Kayfun mini v3 you should be able to build coils that give you close to the liquid consumption of your clearos. As a general rule, rebuilt coils will last longer than prebuilt coils, particularly at lower wattages. As you can easily change out the wick and clean the coils the coils themselves can last almost forever (depends on how you vape though). I basically rebuild coils only because I get bored and want to try something new. Coiling will be a matter of minutes once you get used to it.

The Aromamizer is a very radical change to Evod style clearos. I would definitely not recommend it as a replacement for those.

You guys are great - I really appreciate all the comments!

If you've got a T3S you've already got one of the easiest beginner rebuild-ables you'll ever find!

This is very interesting - I'd forgotten that my current coils can be rebuilt. I'd seen a YouTube video on the rebuilding process for these coils a couple years ago and at the time, it seemed a lot more fiddly than I really wanted to deal with, but now that I'm considering going rebuildable anyway, that might be a good place to start. On the other hand, replacement coils run about $1/each, so wicks and wire for rebuilding them won't reallysave me any money, rebuilding these coils will take a fair amount of time and effort (compared to just screwing in a new coil) and won't improve my vaping experience.

Do yerself a favor, go to youtube and do a search for "Evod rebuild" or "Protank rebuild".

Found a great vid on rebuilding those coils (actually, the same vid I saw a couple years ago) - very helpful, thanks!

Scy123, thanks for your detailed response - you gave me a much better understanding of the pros & cons of rebuilding.

my recommendation to you is the aromamizer Supreme

Aromamizer supreme rdta 7ml or the upcoming 4ml, great vape, build high or low ohms, it vapes great

The Aromamizer is a very radical change to Evod style clearos. I would definitely not recommend it as a replacement for those.

Thanks these recommendations, I'll definitely check out the Aromamizer but from KenD's comment and Timmy's equipment suggestions, this sounds like a much more involved upgrade than I'm ready for at present

aromimizer or griffin or even melo 2 are best for my taste. but i make new coil every 3 days as chain vapor [...] also possible eleaf cs air M was my favorite allround. cheap and easy to handle

Thanks! I'm also a constant vaper and hadn't considered what effect frequency of use would have on coil life.

Thanks, guys. I've seen a lot of references to Kayfun tanks on the forums. A lot of people are saying the Kayfun era is pretty much over, but I think most of the folks saying that probably have a ton more experience than me and have just moved on to better, more advanced, higher-end gear. I'm going to look at the Kayfun Lite+ V2 and Mini v3 models, see what FastTech is carrying in the way of clones, and go with one of those for now just to get my feet wet.

Most of the people saying that probably have a hardon for sub-ohm and "cloudz, bruh." And there's nothing wrong with that, it's just not what the Kayfun is about, so if that's what you're after, there are plenty of other tanks on the market that will do you just fine, and you're probably better off looking somewhere else. However, I've not heard of anything that's supposed to be better than the Kayfun at what the Kayfun does best, which is tootle-puffing around 1-2 ohms at under 20 watts.

I'm going to look at the Kayfun Lite+ V2 and Mini v3 models, see what FastTech is carrying in the way of clones, and go with one of those for now just to get my feet wet.
Fluid Vapes just restocked on the Stainless Steel KFL+v2 clone by EHPro. (They have other colors, too, but the SS always sells out first.) $4.99 +shipping for a known great version, shipped from the US (that's where I bought the 2 that I paid for, shipping was fast and cheap) and at least as good if not better than anything you're likely to get from FT: Kayfun Lite Plus V2 Dual Airflow Clone by EHPro

EDIT: The Mini v3 looks really nice, too. I haven't got my hands on one yet but I may check out a FT clone here eventually, if one of the "major" cloners doesn't come out with a "best" version before then.

Nah... I have a feeling giant steam clouds might give me away when I'm sneaking hits in my favorite restaurant.

Excellent tip on the Fuild Vapes Kayfun Lite+ v2 clones. I ordered two SS tanks, can't wait to give them a try!

Thanks very much!

Hey, Timmy. Thanks for the tip. I checked out the Aromamizer and I gotta say, it does look great. I was initially concerned about dropping a $55 RDTA, but it looks like replacement glass is only about $2 a pop, so assuming a broken glass tank would be the usual penalty for dropping it, I could wind up spending less money going forward than I do replacing my T3S's when I break them.

I think that atomizer is considerably over my head and I'm likely biting off more than I can chew, but I've been curious about higher-end atomizers for a long time, so I went ahead and ordered one. No clue if my 40W Coolfire 4 battery will drive it, but hopefully it'll be enough to give me a sense of what that class of atty brings to the table.

So... I now have the Aromamizer Supreme on order, plus two Kayfun Lite+ V2 clones (based on other members' suggestions) and another member has offered to give me some off-list help rebuilding my Kanger coils, all of which should give me a much broader sense of which direction I want to go in the future.

Kayfuns definitely aren't the newest stuff out there, but if you're into mouth-to-lung vaping they are difficult to beat. The old Kayfun Lite is still a very popular atty. It doesn't fit my particular vape style anymore, but it is a great tank (though I'd recommend the Kayfun 4 or Kayfun Mini v3 due to the top fill function).
