Should I try it out?

Hi all,

I've thought about trying out e-cigs for a while now but haven't gotten around to it.

I'm a former smoker. I started in 1999 (when I was 18) and smoked for 5 years or so. For much of that time, I smoked 2 packs a day of camel or marlboro lights. I quit with the help of the patch and have only smoked a handful of cigarettes since (here and there when too drunk to care, none of these instances have led to me becoming re-addicted). I have the very occasional cigar when offered one.

As a former smoker, I enjoy not having the gripping addiction that normal cigarettes gave me, but I still look back at the act of smoking being a really fun, enjoyable thing. I loved standing around with people smoking, or smoking at my computer relaxing, or smoking driving down the road.

At this point I have complete control over my addiction and I'm not worried at all about slipping. In your opinions, would me trying out e-cigs be a potential slippery slope of falling back into my old addiction? I see some people saying they used e-cigs to quit regular cigs but as a former smoker, would it be stupid of me to even test the waters? I imagine most former smokers would just stay away from anything that has to do with smoking (because quitting smoking was ROUGH, and I don't want to have to go through that again) but like I said, there was a lot I liked about smoking and if I can do it again without it controlling my life I'm interested.

Thanks for any advice.

You should definitely try e-cigs without nicotine if you want to start. I agree that just the act of smoking can be relaxing and social. There is really little need to involve the nicotine if you don't have to. There are several good brands that are available that look like regular analogs and are reliable.

My thinking is the same along the same line ^

Yes, it would be even more slipery than your first addiction.
The taste is unbelievable so you'ld become addicted to it in addition to the nicotine.
The effect of the nicotine is much more calming and enjoyable so you'ld become addicted to that.
All the toys are just too kool so again, addicted.
The variety of flavors, Combinations of PG/VG, selection of nicotine level, more addictive toys to plat with.
And then you find out you can buy the raw materials and make your own juice.

If you've quit succesfully, quit permanently.

I think it's really up to you and what you think you can handle. I know for me smoking isn't an addiction, it's a habit, and one that I very much enjoy for the reasons you mentioned. It's like listening to a good record or having a nice glass of wine. That said, there are tons of options for nicotine free e cigs. If you're considering ordering a set from the internet (my suggestion) look for refillable e-cigs like the Joye 510's, and find juice that gives you an option for nicotine free. Most juices give you on option when you add them to your cart of nicotine level, usually in Milligrams. You would want to select 0 mil (obviously) for nicotine free vaping. At that point, you're basically inhaling water vapor with a bit of flavoring chemicals/oil in them. Of course, only you know if this action will lead you to the temptation of actually smoking, but honestly I started vaping instead of smoking 2 years ago, and haven't smoked a cigarette since. Not because I wanted to quit especially, but because I found Vaping to actually be better. One word of caution: Vaping can be frustrating, especially at first. Until you find your ideal solution you may go through a multitude of brands/kits/Mods. Batteries fail, they run short (especially for cigarette sized vaporizers) and I found I would buy a set and then they'd stop making parts for it. Even now it's kind of a struggle, but I still get to enjoy nearly all the things I loved about smoking, and my lungs feel like they can carry me over mountains now. Plus I don't smell like cigarette smoke, I'm not spending hundreds of dollars a month (New York City) and I don't have ash everywhere. It's pretty great. Anyways, good luck on whatever you decide to do.
Cheers,
Michael

Thanks for the replies everyone. Lots of good stuff to think about.

I'm going to definitely stay away from anything with nicotine. The more I think about it the more I realize it'll pull me back in before I know it.

I'm curious about the 0 nicotine juice though and will look into it some more. One thing I'm worried about is it sounds like they put together whatever mixture you ask for, so how will I know I can trust I'm getting what I requested (juice with 0% nicotine)?

I'm confident I can handle not falling back into anything if there's no nicotine involved. If I start feeling like I need to switch to real cigarettes, I have the chance to quit again without the pull of nicotine, which would be way easier :)

Anyway, sounds like it could be fun so I think I'll research it some more.

Thanks again.
