Shut Down at the Yard House!!

So, the other evening I was with some friends at the Yard House celebrating a birthday. We were all sitting at the bar bs'ing so I decided to bust out my twist and puffed away. After a few puffs I noticed a small congregation of bartenders and barbacks having a conversation while looking my way. After a minute or two, the bartender came over and said he got a complaint about me smoking. I gave him the usual about it being vapor, not smoke, but he said that it was not allowed in any Yard House restaurants. I asked him name (Ken) and his position. He first says he's the manager. I ask him if he's the "real" manager, or just a manager on duty filling in for the real guy/girl. He balks, then admits he's an m.o.d., but I still couldn't vape. I should have requested a copy of their corporate policy, but I stopped there not wanting to make a scene at my friends birthday and put my twist away. I feel a little violated though. Has this happened to anybody else? I guess I wrongly assumed that the Yard House, with all their fine beers and hipster clientele, would allow vaping.

It is more and more common these days.
Good idea, not making a big fuss there. Far better to clarify the policy with the corporate office.
It is a business and they do have the right to set policies as they see fit.

I don't think you have to wait until you see someone using an e-Cigarette. Heck, you might be the only one in here with one.

But if it was me, I would walk in and ask to speak to the Manager Before I ordered anything. Then I would ask He/She if they allow e-Cigarette use?

If He/She says Yes, I would say "Thank You", and then place my Order. If He/She says No, I would say "Thank You" and then decide if I want to Place an Order.

I always ask the owner first (moreso at restaurants i frequent). I was the first to ask at two and showed them how it worked and demonstrated. Both of which are vape friendly now and if anyone ever says anything i have the word from the owner and not some peeon.

Its not good to be arrogant about it though, thats the last type of attitude vaping needs. If it in fact wasnt on their corporate policy, the way that its most likely going to be presented to them is in a negative way therefore most likely banning it. Big headed, power tripping, and self appointed managers dont like to be wrong.

Here in Kansas, even though the State and many local governments have not adopted e-cigarettes into their anti-smoking laws (and it is therefore, technically, legal unless it is specifically posted), there is a 99.99999999% chance that -if asked beforehand- any business establishment which doesn't allow smoking won't allow vaping either.

As a general rule, if I were to get a bee in my bonnet and want to vape somewhere I knew smoking wasn't allowed, I'd do so stealthly or simply invoke the "better to ask for forgiveness than permission" principle.

Those 'peons' as you called them are often people just trying to scrape out a living like the rest of us. You can get uneducated douches in every position at every place of work. Those peons also probably work harder than anyone else in the whole bar or restaurant - including the manager.

Anyway, as for the OP, I think you handled it right - I would have probably asked before I starting vaping, but the outcome would have been the same. It's just a shame that more and more restaurants and bars are installing no vaping policies.

Just like there are "Big headed, power tripping, and self appointed managers" in the world, there are "Big headed, power tripping, and self appointed" vapers.

In fact, there are "Big headed, power tripping, and self appointed" whatever in every type of Business and Walk of Life.

But I have found that these "Big headed, power tripping, and self appointed ________" are FAR OUT NUMBERED by just Normal People doing their Job. Or just Average People going about their Daily routines.

And this is why I ask first and, refrain but make arrangements to meet with the owner or senior manager privately later to explain vaping and, demonstrate it for them - even let them try it if they want (always carry condoms for your tips, never know when it may need one.)

I prefer just to respect places that there is "No Smoking" enforced and not vape there either. If I am at a restaurant, I'll go outside and vape etc. If I'm questioned about it, I explain what it is, how it works but I don't force the fact that I should be ALLOWED to vape there. I feel that forcing it can have/has a negative impact on vaping being accepted as a whole.

I always ask before vaping - have yet to be told no. I did stealth vape one night at a brewpub/eatery when we had a not-so-friendly server, I never had the chance to pose the question. If I'm in a crowded family restaruant, I just put it away.
