I just dislike through hole resistors and caps, to bulky.Dan
Agree on that one. Been working with electronics for decades. I switched over to SMD on my personal projects a long time ago. At first I was thinking it was going to make things harder, but it's actually easier and faster. Plus, there's no drilling. I got real tired of drilling holes in my home-brew PCBs and I've drilled a lot of them. You can do your own reflow soldering with SMD as well.
Just have to get over the idea of it being more difficult, it's not. Don't really have a choice these days anyway. None of the new chips are available in thru-hole. 10 years ago, you had the choice, but not anymore. Thru-hole is pretty dead, just the last vestiges of parts out there now.
The only benefit to thru-hole is that you can make stuff without using a PCB, but making PCB's is not that hard. It's actually harder not to use a PCB. Lots of resources for making PCBs on the net, just search on "PCB laser printer transfer". You can also have them manufactured which isn't all that expensive. I make the simple ones myself, but the more involved ones I have manufactured.
