With my recent dive into making my own coils one problem I have ran into is that while I am wrapping the coil around the silica, as instructed in many videos, it starts to rip at the start of the coil, where I am holding the silica. Is this normal? Anyway around this? I would love to wrap the coil and then feed the silica through the finished coil much like cotton is used but have had no luck with that.

I usually wrap the first wrap a little looser..add an extra wrap and then unwind that first one when finished.
Most tears in the wick seem to happen with that first wrap in my experience.

When I switched to rayon I gave away all my cotton and silica wicking materials.
