after building the coil you can try torching the wick. silica/fiberglass doesnt burn easy.
or try boiling it. since most of the wick we use is really used in fiberglass spray guns some venders may not be buying or carrying the cleanest stuff. as in most cases not vape related its just a box laying in a dusty warehouse.

if all else fails oh well i went through this too untill i found what i likes and stuck with it.

Also, you may have had a hotspot on your original build. In my experience poor flavor or taste on a newly built coil is almost always related to a hidden hotspot. Make another coil and try to make sure both legs are the same length and check for hotspots before you fire it up. That should tell you whether it's the silica or the build.

My only option for silica is online. eBay can give me the best prices. My very first order I built a coil straight out if the box (in this case the envelope) I got a nasty taste also. Trashed the entire build and made another wick. Same nasty taste. Went back onto eBay to email the vendor but noticed a disclaimer on the same exact ad I ordered from. The disclaimer said to torch the silica with blue flame for atleast 15 seconds. I did that on my third try and no nasty taste at all. I've noticed practically all the vendors on eBay have the same disclaimer to torch your silica.
