Simple DIY Liquid Question

Howdy everyone! First, I would like to introduce myself: My name is Josh, however, to simplify things, if anyone needs to mention my name in a post, feel free to say Jib or jibgilmon (as they are obviousy easier to remember, since you will see my username more often). I am 19 years old, from the northern suburbs of Chicago, and I attend university in Connecticut.

I am not a cigarette smoker, and I have only smoked two in my life (as per requests for friends' 18th birthdays). I have, on the other hand, been a regular "other" smoker for the past two years, but I do smoke responsibly; I have continued to be a straight-A student, and have yet to experience any encounters with the law. The last month of my schooling has been increasingly stressful, as my finals were last week. Usually, after a long day of studying and working on projects (I am an industrial design major) I like to unwind and relieve some stress by smoking some "other stuff". Last weekend, however, I found myself to be overly-stressed midday, when I still had work to do. Most of the stress relief from smoking was from the physical act of smoking, not the "other stuff", and "the result" was more of a reward for a hard day's work than a stress reliever. And so, in an attempt to battle my stress without getting "the result", I ventured to Walgreens and picked up a Blu disposable menthol. Much to my relief, this was perfect to combat my stress, and it turned out to be the proper alternative.

My mother started smoking cigarettes within the last 5 years, and just yesterday, I was finally able to convince her to try what I had left from my Blu disposable (I stopped using it when I was done with finals; I didn't want to drift into a nicotine addiction). I had been trying to get her to buy an e-cig for the past year, but yesterday was her first time really trying one. Fortunately, she loved it, and vouched to buy a starter kit and do her best to completely switch to vaporizing. Yesterday she bought us both PVs; she got a standard Volcano (seemed like a good product for a first-time user from what we read here), and I got a Magma-T (with a nicotine-free liquid).

Now, I have a question to ask! I have done a bit of reading in the DIY liquid section, and I've noticed that the guides tell you what ingredients are required, however, they don't explain why some of them are necesarry. And so my question is as follows:

If I want to create my own liquid, without nicotine, would it be suitable to simply mix vegetable glycerine (I have a large bottle of food grade form a health store) with a candy flavoring concentrate? Why (not)?

I figure if I am only looking for vapor, a simple solution between those two would be the ideal product, with the possible exception of the sweetener that is sometimes used in liquids.

While I appreciate the responses, they still do not answer my question. To clarify:

If I mixed ONLY VG and a suitable flavoring, would that be an appropriate solution? I would post on the DIY board, however I cannot due to the forum restrictions.

jib, the simple answer to your question is YES. The only thing to pay attention to is that some of the candy flavorings are oils, and that's not good. So....read the labels and make sure that they have propylene glycol or glycerine as their main ingredient. Oils are not good...they'll clog up your atomizers/cartomizers...and your lungs. Also...."food grade" glycerine will work, but we usually recommend USP (US Pharmaceutical) grade, just to be safe. I think it's a little more pure. Anyway, I know it sounds too simple, but that's it. If you're going for no nic, then there are just two ingredients to deal with...the flavoring and the base (either VG or PG = vegetable glycerine or propylene glycol.) NOTE: the flavorings need to be the concentrated kind.....LorAnn's is a good place to start because you can get them at a Hobby Lobby or cake making/cookie making places. Vanilla Extract, for instance, won't work. It'll be too watered down and weak. Okay...got it?

One could use all vg base. It all depends on the quality of the vg itself. I would recommend at the very least picking up some USP VG at Walmart or other local pharmacy. Distilled water is great for thinning. I have even used sterile water at times. (I do have sterile water).

I vape flavorings that are alcohol based without ill effects noted.

The candy flavoring and VG liquid is a good start, but you need PG too (try feed stores, or you can just buy it online). I have experience with this exact set up, from the same retailer. This is very important for your current set up. Though it is possible to vape pure VG with some equipment, your Volcano Magma tankomizer is not one of them. I don't recommend any more than 20% VG in that setup, or the tanko is going to clog VERY quickly. That's not good. You need an 80%PG/ 20%VG mix. Alternatively, you can thin the VG, but to be honest, personally I've never had a good result doing that.

Or you could get some Clearomizers and/or atty and drip tip, and pure VG would be fine. Sure, it'd gunk up quicker too, but Clearos are pretty cheap (and you actually can clean them), and regular attys are a lot easier to clean than tank attys; that metal spike causes problems.

Thank you for the info everyone, extremely helpful! Also, JC Okie, food grade is actually higher than USP (more pure). The only difference between the two is that food grade is only kept in food grade containers throughout manufacturing and distribution, while USP usually starts as food grade, and is not handled correctly, resulting in a less pure product. If I'm not mistaken, the standards are 95% for USP and 99% for food grade.
