So I got my Magneto clone in the mail, FINALLY (thanks slowtech) and decided to try it with my RSST in stead of the eGo. Started getting less flavorful hits on my 2.2 ohm semi-micro coil on a cotton bed. Worked pretty much fine on eGo. Decided to tinker around and try 1.5 ohm bedded coil, a 1.5 around a vertical wick, then a 2.5 bedded, etc.

Every new attempt just gives me tons of near-flavorless vapor. And it's still flavorless with the eGo.

Tried a 1.2 ohm micro on the Magneto, and still pretty bloody flavorless.

Any tips folks? I don't want to keep burning through my juice just for some nicotine and plain clouds...

Are you using any kind of an air reducer in the top cap?

If I may suggest it, try rolling up an SS mesh wick and coiling it with 28 kanthal 4/3 wraps for .8 ohm. Works very well for me.

It's common knowledge that the RSST has a massive top cap... I stuck a cotton ball in mine the first day I got it. It basically doubles the flavor that you get.

Well I use an RSST every day all day, and I have no problems with it at all, but then I've never tried to build it with a microcoil and cotton either. It's a genny, it works bests when built like a genny.

Interesting. I do want to add that, 1.2-1.5 coils (using 32 gauge nichrome in my case) seemed to burn the juice way too quickly and gave too hot/flavorless hits. Somehow I just don't see much of a point in going too low in resistance unless to build a proper micro.

I'll try the chamber filler trick, seems interesting.

I prefer micro coils regardless of wick material. They're just easier to work with. I wrapped a new one last night @ 1.7 ohms with cotton. Once I figured out how much cotton to use for it to wick properly I was blown away. The thing just THROWS vapor off the deck... It's like a freaking tea pot.



Pretty sure I'm sticking with cotton now.

I am guilty of building mine w/ micro/cotton setup in the beginning because that is what I was used to and it was easier to set it up and not have to deal with hot spots and wicking... I always had leaking problems with that setup though. I could walk inside the house and set my device down and from the temp change, (outside to inside), the tank would just empty into the top cap. Liquid everywhere, even with the fill plug in!! When I finally took the time to research and ask questions, and setup my RSST properly the vape increased ten fold... Vapor and flavor jumped off the charts... To top it off, all my leaking problems vanished as well. I love this genny... Can't wait for the Pyrex version to hit now. I have one on order but won't get here till maybe the end of January...

I started with normal 4/5 coils and mesh on my RSST cause I didn't know about micros at first... No problems setting them up or with wicking. I just prefer micros.

Man, cotton wicks like crazy when it's setup right. I just popped my top cap off and the juice is starting to pool up around the wick hole on top of the deck.

That's actually one thing I was remedying with cotton bedding around the wick hole- juice being eeeeeverywhere. It worked quite well, but just didn't burn quite right on a few setups.

I went ahead and did a 4/3 wrap on 400 SS and put a tiny long roll of cotton right around the wick hole. It burns quite well, flavor all there, but I'll have to wait and see about leaking. SS is almost too fast on juice delivery, just like cotton.

Really? suggesting sub ohm coils for someone with only 47 posts (suggesting they might be new to this site and possibly vaping) and also sounds like they are only just switching from an ego. I would suggest going no lower than 1.2 for now. Please make sure to research and read up on battery safety. I can only hope you did all this before purchasing a mech mod. I tried a few sub-ohm coils myself and found I preferred a resistance range from 1.2 - 1.6 depending on the device.

So how do you know it can't be as good with cotton if you've never tried it?

Granted I couldn't make a proper micro coil for a cotton bed setup with my available supplies, but what I had tried worked quite well for my tastes.

The thing with thinner wire is it has less surface area per watt than thicker wire. IMO that's one reason you could be experiencing heat and loss of flavor. I use 27 gauge on SS mesh in my AGA-T and I get a cool flavorful vape at 0.7 ohms. I did open up the air hole, but you shouldn't have to at 1.2-1.5 ohms. You also need to keep the air hole on the coil or you will lose flavor and vapor.

Having said that, going lower in resistance will just vaporize more juice per puff because there's more heat being delivered to the coil. No way to get around that, but if it's set up right more juice will generally give you more of everything, flavor, TH and vapor.
