I'm with Eratik on this one.... I even opened up my vent holes on the one mech I currently have... those holes just seemed so tiny that I wasn't happy with them... nothing a drill press can't fix though! I suppose you could poke a hole through the card before you put the battery in though... :unsure:

Today I Noticed a small rip on my Sony 18650VTC5 2600mAh 30A (picture below)

Should I dispose of the battery or do you guys think it's okay to keep using, its a shame because its not even a week old.

In a regular side firing mod, the bottom cap is in contact with the negative base of the battery, and the whole tube of the mod is therefore in contact with the negative base of the battery, so it wouldn't matter if there is a rip on the side covering of the battery.

The problem is when you use a bottom firing switch mod.

This is not correct! There are a number of side fire mech mods that connect the battery neg with the tube when fired.

You mean with an inverted battery?

The bottom end cap connects the battery to the side of the tube; so as long as the negative is at the bottom, the whole tube is negative.

Somewhere out there
Don't use the battery the way it is. Sure, depending on the type of device, it may be OK. But what happens if you switch to a different type device and forget about that little nick?

Fix it with electrical tape just for now and order up some shrink wrap. It's super easy to do and all you need is a hairdryer.

I do not invert or suggest anyone do so. Take a look at this picture the battery neg is isolated from the tube until you fire it. There are numerous mods based off this same concept.

So does that SS GGTS Stealth mod work my contacting the side of the battery instead of the bottom? That's what is looks like I think?

--- oh wait I think I get it;
theres a longish rod at the bottom which is negative, and the side switch when you push it contacts the rod and makes the connection.

Bottom line is it is a bottom fired mod. It just contacts sideways instead of vertically.
If there's a tear on the insulation of the battery, the mod can fire on its own.

Yes. The button contacts the pin, but the pin itself is isolated from the body by a non-conductive insert.
So, yes, if the body of the battery (without the shrink wrap) contacts the inside of the metal tube, then the mod will still fire.

The bottom line is a torn battery wrapper is not safe in all side button mech mods as your original statement said.
