Smok TFV4 Sub Ohm Tank

cool, care to share your wicking tech? would really love to emulate that.

Ill take some pics next time I rewick, but I basically cut the wick flush with the deck, fluff it out, and then cut the top portion of the wick off at a 45 degree angle so the wick is shaped like this / \
That allows plenty at the bottom to block the wicking chanels to prevent leaking, but is thin enough at the top for max juiceflow to the coils to prevent dry hits.

This may not be needed for all builds, but again, Im running 22g wrapped around a 3mm mandrel. Its a wide bore coil and requires a fair amount of wick.

So... I got the TFV4 tank last night. I put two tanks of juice through the triple coil it and I'm not blown away. Given the near unanimous acclaim for it, I'm wondering what's going wrong. I've considered that it still needs to break in, but I've noticed a few cons besides the typical uses too much juice...

MY TFV4 Cons...
1. Get's very hot. If I take 5 hits in a couple of minutes, tank is so hot I need to be careful where I put it.
2. Changing the coil requires you to open the entire tank. That means you will probably lose some juice in the process.
3. Flavor - The flavor tastes burnt. I'm used to TC, but if I push the TFV4 up enough to give me a good vape, the flavor is muted and maybe burnt.
4. The top cap is a bit loose. It's not so hard to open accidentally in your pocket.
5. Drains my 18650 battery at 60w in about an hour. Maybe 4ml. I went through two batteries last night and I wasn't chain vaping.
6. Drip tip is very tight. You can easily pull it off and open the top at the same time. You need to be careful not to spill juice.


Now, I'm using an SX Mini M-Class. It barely has enough power for it, so that may have something to do with the battery. I'm also used to TC and my TC coils are still in the mail.

Let me know if it seems like something seems wrong. I'm not sure my tank is operating at 100%. I get better flavor out of my Atlantis. Not as much volume, but better flavor.

1. The tripple coil does get hot. When I used it from 70-100 watts, it would heat the tank up rather quickly. The quad heats up as well, but to a lesser extent. Running the RBA keeps the deck the coolist while still providing warm, satisfying vape.

2. Yes, to change coils, you have to open the tank. I never change unless I vape the sucker dry. And yes, unlike many other tanks, you can vape the TFV bone dry. Other than that, you have to dump the juice.

3. Give the coil some time. They have a bit of a break in. A few tanks. If its still tasting burnt, may just be that coil. Flavor for my has always been superb.

4. Yes, some seem to have looser top caps than others. My bud and I bought on the same day fro mthe same B&M, and my top cap was noticably more "giving" than his. Not a huge deal for me. If I pocket it at all, I use the black rubber ring to hold the swivel top secure. Id prefer not to have to, but its not all that bad.

5. Yea, it can be a battery hod, especially if you use a single 18650 mod. I throw it on my IPV Mini 2 from time to time because I love that little mod, but I only get a tank, may a tank and a half before it starts crying for mercy. Im usually between 70-90 watts (granted only 70 on the IPV Mini), and that really drains single battery mods. Dual 18650 mods are much better, but its gonna make your batteries weap one way or the other.

6. My drip tip isnt really tight at all. You may just need to break in those O rings a bit.


Dont give up on the TFV yet. Its a great tank. Give that triple a bit of time, and then try the quad if you have one. Keep in mind, the quad is a lower resistance and some single battery mods cant run it (like my IPV Mini). If you still arnt digging it, try building the RBA. I havent used a stock coil in over a month now after really tweaking the RBA to my liking.

For a regular daily tank, I think the Crown is a top choice. I leave my v4 at home for after work.
Both are great tanks though.

For me, the triple coil spits more than the quad. Any time you have an open verticle coil (externally wicked) theres gonna be some spitting. The best way to solve it is to turn up your wattage. Vaporize that .... before it can get to your mouth

Sorry man. I'm a simple vaper now. Pre-made coils for me. I've been through the rebuilding and its just not for me. I rather go surf the forums as I find myself losing patience as I get older.

I'm thinking the flavor I was getting was from the packaging. I gave up on the triple coil and used the RBA deck. I did a twisted Ni build, and wicked it up. It gave a great vape. I went to put it in my pocket, and all of my juice came out.

Guess I've got to figure out the quirks of building on this thing. I kind of like the form.

Yep, thatll happen.
You have to make sure you have a healthy amount of wicking blocking the wick channel. Its a fine line. Too much and you choke it and restrict juice flow. Too little and you have a pocket full of juice.

The stock coil in the RBA isn't terrible. I'm surprised how well its working out for me, especially considering how little effort I put into wicking it. Only running it at 40 watts on a DNA40 hammond box because the damn tank looks stupid on my VS200.

Takes a sec to ramp up, but yeah, it still puts out at 40W. Its the stock RBA wire, comes out to like .72ohm.

Did you try pulsing it without the cotton? You want it to glow from the inside out. Otherwise, there could be hot spots.

I'm no expert on this device, but that would be the first thing to try.

same bore here...so fluff it out on the deck, cut the 45 degree...do you screw the chimney cap on with dry wick?

I cut flush to the deck, fluff, cap with dry wick and lightly tuck the ends towards the juice grooves using a small screwdriver. Lightly saturate (70/30), assemble and go. No leaks on the dual deck.

50W @ 138 C on dual 0.5mm Ti gets blazing hot as well. They need to add some more PEEK on the deck.

I unthread the top cap, pour the remaining juice into a second tank and refill from that tank if need be. Minimal loss.

I noticed the muting of flavors when the airflow slots were wide open. Adjusted the airflow, flavor came back. YMMV.

Though my top cap is snug, it will definitely slide open if left in the pocket without the supplied band.

Drip tip is snug here, I would not say that it is very tight at all. This is more a matter of manufacturing tolerances, I suppose.

I get better flavor out of my Atlantis. Not as much volume, but better flavor.

Again, may be an issue with excess airflow.
