Welcome and congratulations! I also smoked for 40 years and am proof that it can be done. I have been tobacco free for 2 years.
I think it's important not to push yourself too hard. There may be times when you're stressed and you really need a cigarette. If the cravings get too bad, have one. It doesn't mean you failed - you handled the situation the best as you could at that moment. Then when you're not feeling so stressed we can help you figure out ways to deal with future situations. There are tricks and tips.
Something that helped me was that I had no intention to quit smoking. I liked smoking. I just got an e-cig to play with and at some point "forgot" to smoke. Vaping doesn't help you stop smoking, it's more like discovering something you find more engaging and satisfying. It also keeps you focused, since there are so many things to learn and pretty shiny things to look at. We were smokers; smokers are addicts and part of addictive behavior is
novelty seeking - always searching for something new. You are entering a whole new subcultural full of people who have been where you are and understand how hard it is to want to stop something and not be able to. So have fun with it. We're always here for you.
ETA: Lots of over-40 years on this thread. When I first joined I thought I was going to be the old fogey lurking in the background, but I quickly learned that we might just have dem kids out nummerd.
Quit vaping on my lawn!
