As a smoker I always found myself backing away from close contact with people because I didn't want to knock them over with ashtray breath. I'm sure I must have eaten my weight in breath mints over the years. However, cigarette smoke clings to your hair and skin and clothing.....even as a smoker myself, I could always tell when someone else had just smoked a cigarette.

I really don't have a good concept of how the breath smells after an e-cig, but I feel quite confident that it can't be anything like as bad as with real cigarettes.

My first dental appointment as a non-smoker will be next week, so maybe I'll be able to answer the tartar question when the dental assistant gets through with the cleaning. I'm praying for less tartar because that girl is ruthless!

Funny you should post this. I started going to the dentist to get my teeth "scaled" 2 weeks after I stopped smoking cigarettes. I just went in for my third visit in a month today (right side of my mouth scaled). The hygienist asked me if I quit smoking and I told her I did. She said that my teeth were looking fabulous since she started working on them and they continue to look better everyday. And I can personally say that my teeth haven't looked this good in a long time!!!!

So yes, I can attest to the fact that you will no LONGER have smoker's teeth with the e-cig. Just make sure to go in and get a good cleaning and scaling when you are done with the tobacco smokes. You owe it to yourself!

Looking ahead, future dental texts will make note of the dreaded Propylene Glycol Teeth problem. You don't want to know.

But rest assured that Colgate is hard at work on a special toothpaste, NicoGate, for E-Smokers. It's 80% toothpaste and 20% nicotine gel. It takes feeling good about brushing to a new level.

More to the point, my dog will now sniff my breath. When I smoked cigarettes, he'd get near me, snort, and walk away.

Ah Cindy, she thinks the vapors smell like sweet potato. Go figure. (Also remember that I smoke a real pipe morning and evening, plus use snus, plus brush and gargle several times daily, so who knows? No complaints, though.) In all honesty, I don't see e-smoking harming my teeth at all. I can't say that for snus. They can brown teeth, so I have to pay special attention. If e-smoking can get to me to zero nicotine, I'm dumping snus, too.

It's great to hear that our teeth are healthier as e-smokers, so can we assume that the soft tissues in the mouth (cheeks, tongue, gums etc.) also recover and are no longer in danger from the harmful effects of smoking tobacco? (possible mouth cancer etc.)

My dentist always frowns, looks serious and does extra checks as I was a smoker. Not sure if she's just trying to get the whole stop smoking message across strongly or what. If she was, she did a good job! I worry every visit now but haven't been since I've been e-smoking.

Just wondered if anyone else had the same sort of experience with their dentist and since e-smoking what the verdict was on the whole mouth thing?

Thanks

I love the toothpaste!

Personally I am waiting on Nico-foot beds for shoes. Imagine a delightful cushion that releases nicotine directly into the soles of your feet every time you step. Walking is already on the rise in the US - suddenly it would become the walking revolution. Reduce your carbon foot print, lessen your dependence on foreign oil, improve your health and get a little pick-me up all at the same time.

Call it Nico-Feet!

The funny thing is you can get all sorts of products like that with caffine. Caffinated shampoo, soap, lip balm, candy. I like the shampoo. But then, caffine isn't a demon drug.
For those who don't believe that:
http://www.thinkgeek.com/caffeine/all/ (bawls mints taste good but that's it (same for penguin mints), but the jolt gum is great - but don't touch umph, it's awful. Foosh is good caffeine-wise, but it takes ages to dissolve (sp?) in your mouth. The octane energy gel feels good but I doubt you really get caffeine from it. The breath spray is really spicy and has no real taste. Before you ask: Yes, I'll probably die because of a coffeine overdose ;))

Smokester:

Next time you go in for an appointment - post your results.

It would be great to know if our dentists are seeing any improvement.

Well, I had my 6 month checkup and hygenist appointment just now and the prognosis is good :)

Firstly I'd like to apologise to anyone that already knows about this stuff.

Both the dentist and the hygenist were impressed with the device (I gave them a demo!!) I've never smoked in a dentist surgery before. It felt weird!!

Onto the good stuff... There has been a "significant improvement" to my teeth and gums/soft tissues. The plaque had also been reduced.

Now, the dentist did say that there was a distinct lack of saliva (which we all know here anyway) but that brings some additional problems in the form of more potential tooth decay. The saliva contains stuff that fights the stuff that causes the decay. Thankfully we can redress the balance as long as we follow a few simple rules:

-Chew sugar free gum (to promote more saliva)
-If you don't do it already, brushing twice a day is a MUST.
-Using a good mouthwash will also help fight the decay potential.
-Drink plenty of water.

So there you have it. Neither of them had heard about the e-cig before so I've pointed them in the direction of this forum for more information.

Thanks
