I've been on several cruises over the years...always as a smoker. We always got a balcony room, allowing me to sit on the balcony and blow one as opposed to going to the dedicated smoking area or the casino. Now that I'm a vaper, going on a cruise in 3 weeks, I wondered if there were any rules about it onboard. Going through the FAQ's I see an article about e-cigs. Yep, restricted to balconies and dedicated smoking areas, for the "comfort of the other passengers". Huh ?? Will the mis-information ever end ??

Different cruise lines have different rules for vaping. Princess is very vape friendly :) Sounds like you're cruising on Carnival ? The fact that Carnival specifically says they do not allow vaping in cabins really makes me shake my head and know without a doubt that those making up the rules don't know the first thing about vaping  The mis-information IS mind boggling sometimes

Yep, I'm on Carnival this time. I've been on Princess also (as a smoker), and the odd thing is; they are both owned by the same company, I wonder why there are different rules ?

And I'll be honest. I WILL be vaping in my room even though we have a balcony. Vape don't stink, so what they don't know won't hurt them. I can always play the "Oh, I didn't know" card. I've been on Carnival for seven 7-day cruises, I'm assuming they'd cut me some slack if I got caught...

Yep, I sometimes vaped in our cabin when we cruised on Carnival last year :) I've enjoyed vaping on several of our Princess cruises :) Even though they are owned by the same company they have a lot of different rules so obviously many of their rules are per brand not corporate decisions.

I wouldn't expect them to cut you slack just because you've cruised mulitiple times with them BUT they've never been a cruiseline to enforce their own rules unless someone complains loudly and repeatedly so I'd have no worries about vaping in your cabin if you don't blow huge plumes of vapor into someones face that walks into your cabin . ;)

I'll be on the Carnival Freedom in mid May. From what I've heard the crew usually won't say anything to you, and if they do they'll just ask what it is. I intend on vaping in my cabin. I don't see how they would know if i did. I don't think it'll be a big issue, but if it is i might look Princess for the next cruise.

Trying to think ahead, I know I won't be a jerk on the ship if I get harassed, but I have a plan to write a strongly worded letter to the Powers That Be if I am. Something along the lines of this:

Dear _____,

I recently completed a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean and completely enjoyed myself and the cruise. But I feel I must bring to your attention the matter of electronic cigarettes and Carnival's policy toward their use.

I was advised that the current policy is that electronic cigarette users must smoke in designated smoking areas. I am using an electronic cigarette to stop using traditional tobacco cigarettes and I feel this policy is contradictive to my attempt at quitting my addiction to tobacco. Would you find it acceptable to tell a recovering alcoholic that the ONLY place he can drink his soft drink/coffee is at the bar in a night club ? Would you find it acceptable to tell a struggling dieter that the ONLY place they can eat their salad is at a table alongside the dessert tables ?

I am sure this electronic cigarette policy was implemented without the proper knowledge/training of what an electronic cigarette is. I suggest Carnival look into what it is and what it is about and hopefully update your policy.

Etc., etc., etc..

I could go on and on, but you guys get the drift of what I'd say. I haven't been thinking about this, honestly, I just have an active imagination and just thought all this off the cuff and started typing. I do that.....:p

Just go ahead and vape in your cabin. If a crew member happens to wander in/by and ask, "What's that aroma I detect?" You just respond, "That's my wife's douche." <talk 'bout blowin' 'smoke'!>

They say that vaping is only allowed in smoking areas for the "comfort of other guests". Since vaping doesn't smell like cigarette smoke, I can only take that to mean they don't want the other guests to even see it because they might be offended. And as we all know, here in todays society, everybody has the right to not be offended. I'm being sarcastic of course.

Actually, we always get extended balcony room because I was a smoker. So chances are I'll be on the balcony as usual, we spend a lot of time on the balcony eating (free room service), reading, playing dominoes if we aren't at an onboard show. I just don't like being TOLD I have to hang with the smokers because I ain't smoking !!

And don't forget to bring plenty of pre-charged batteries, I hear their generators suck water:toast::laugh::D

No worries, we'll be on the Magic, a two year old ship. Not that that really means anything, but the troubled ships of late were much, much older.

Oh, I'm taking 7 batteries, 3 charging systems....

Well, I'm back. Got in yesterday. The cruise line was most forgiving when it comes to vaping. Several passengers were, and no staff said a word to any of us. So that's good. I vaped everywhere, but I admit I stealth vaped when in public. In the casino or in my room....well, y'know..... :vapor:

Bad part was I slipped and fell on day 3 while getting off the water slide and broke a couple ribs. So I spent an inordinate amount of time in my cabin whining and moaning about my misfortune. Good thing I brought a lot of cartos and 7 batts, because just getting up to swap batteries was an ordeal. My wife took care of that for me; I averaged one batt a day. But I laid in bed and chain-vaped while looking out the window or I sat on the balcony and listened to others doing what I should've been doing....having fun. Oh well, maybe next year.

I'm on month 2 of no analogs, and of course that week was the week my lungs decided to "clean" themselves and cough out mucus. Yay me. :) Coughing with broken ribs is NOT a joyful experience, let me tell ya....
