I'm still in shock. I rolled out of bed and checked the forum. Ollie was spotted 45 minutes before I awoke. I let the dog out. Fixed me a drink. Ollie was no where to be seen. Then like magic poof - he appears and posts a winners list. And I'm on it.

Stunned!

Who do you consider to be the inventor of the electronic cigarette?

Most vapers would answer Hon Lik, who came up with an electronic inhalation device in the first decade of this century.

But last year we interviewed Herbert Gilbert, who developed a smokeless cigarette in 1960’s.

The debate is still ongoing as to whether Herbert Gilbert or Hon Lik is the true inventor of the modern ecigarette.

But just to throw another major spanner in the works, we found another reference to vaping, originating from the early 80’s and referring to a device invented in the late 70’s.

I'm going to stick with the main man here Hon Lik , he deserves to be mentioned no matter the outcome of this test, without him , none of this would be happening, none of would likely be here, let alone this forum. Simple and true.

Hon Lik - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ruyan V8 is an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) invention and production of Ruyan Group (Holdings) Limited. It was first manufactured and launched in the Chinese market in 2006. The Ruyan V8 atomizes a solution-mixture that may or may not contain nicotine; it produces a vapor. It is free of the 4,000 chemicals commonly produced by a lit, ordinary cigarette, including highly dangerous tar and carbon monoxide[citation needed]. The Ruyan V8 comes in 5 different colors: Red, Blue, White, Brown, Black; replaceable cartridges come in several flavors, including: Black Tea, Fruit, Virginia, Menthol Tea, Jasmine and others. The Ruyan V8 is offered in a set containing one e-cigarette (with battery), one spare battery, a charger and cord, one cartridge and an instruction manual.

Man, do I ever miss RY3 and RY4 (Ruyan3-4), what truly started it all.

@SmokeyJoe There you go Oxford Dictionaries’ word of the year is ‘vape’ - The Washington Post

"The modern e-cigarette was invented by a 52-year-old Chinese pharmacist in 2003, and didn’t appear in the United States until 2006. When it did, Oxford Dictionaries explained, a “gap emerged in the lexicon, as a word was needed to describe this activity, and distinguish it from ‘smoking’. The word vape arose to fill this gap, and it has proliferated along with the habit.”"
This one must be the right answer:nun:

I think he is looking for the word VAPE (or variations of it) in association with nicotine post marked the oldest. Not necessarily articles wrote about the history.

More of a forum post dated 2006 or beyond with the word vape in reference to nicotine.

Not so much an article wrote in 2015 about the history of "vape".

That was my interpretation of the contest anyways.

But the article explains when it needed to use another word instead of smoking. And it is about modern e-cigs. Well this is all i have found.

Usenet and forums
Vape as in a vaporizer can be found at least as early as 1998, probably much earlier. Unsurprisingly, it's much more recent when referring to relatively new e-cigarettes. Here's an April 24, 2008 post on e-cigarette-forum.com:

"Vaping" is just a fancy way to avoid the term "smoking", since smoking is illegal everywhere and these things don't burn anything and don't produce second-hand smoke.

The earliest I found on this forum is from the forum founder pondering in an early post on December 18, 2007:

Well it's not smoking....So what is it?

"E-smoking" is a bit of a handful, "Misting" sounds far too fey, "Vaporizing" or "Vaping" has drug connotations.

There must be a better word for my new hobby! Suggestions?

A few months later, someone else was happy to use vape in a March 2, 2008 post:

I have received both my Sedansa and Njoy ciggies. I would say they are pretty much identical in both appearance and usage. I can interchange the filter cartridges as well as the batteries between the two. They vape about the same. I can drip in both cigs, whether into the atomizer or into the filter. I really like them both.

The e-cig minicig from .......... sucks -- and I don't mean literally. I can't get anything out of them. I don't like their pipe either. It vapes plenty; you just can't inhale and exhale much of anything. I am sending back the pipes and minicigs to ........... I have now ordered ..........'s regular e-cigarette. Hopefully that is more like the Sedansa and the Njoy cigs.

And the same user later that day:

How about you? How are you doing with your ratio smoking/vaping? Are you dripping?

It's now been accepted by the online e-cig community. On the top of every page is a current appeal to vaping Europeans and Americans (along with a safety recall for a device called SLB Vapros V1):

Yes but the article is written in 2014.

I think the winner would be someone who finds the original source for that article.

Make sense?

At least that is how I understood it.

On a side note, I appreciate the articles though! So much information!
