recently got an rsst and my 400 ss mesh and 30g kanthal today. built my first coil(took me forever) and i have all the hot spots out or at least i am sure of it. have it on the vamo which is the only mod i own and getting a kinda metalic taste and its a 5/4 rap at 1.9ohms consistant. Is there a short somewhere? or is it the wick?

Did you torch your ss mesh before rolling? Perhaps you tried the pulse method? (though not recommended on anything but a pure mechanical mod)
Did you torch your kanthal wire before wrapping?

One needs to burn off all the residue from your ss wicks and kanthal to help eliminate contaminates from manufacturing the items and give them a clean starting point to begin your vaping experience. Sounds like work but a good hand held butane flame will work wonders for your vaping. (Approx. $30.00)

Hope that helps!

You said it took you forever it seemed like to build the coil.Did you by any chance happen to get the wire bent during the build,or out of shape? If the wire is out of shape in the wrap it will not be touching the coil and let off the metallic taste.I have gone thru this before rushing to get a coil wrapped and fumbling around with it getting the wire out of shape, and bent at times.

I do not have a torch, but I did use my lighter and eliquid to burn off any contaminates. I did the whole juice.burn....3x. but I don't know how well that works. and I did run my wire through the flame until glowing. and as far as the wire being bent in any way, I don't think it was. I had wrapped it around a nail and slid the wick through the coil.

That might be why you are getting that metallic taste. You slid the wick thru the coil so some of the coil might not be touching the wick and that will give off a metallic taste. If the mesh wick is thinner than the span of the coil wrapped around the nail at any point, that could be it.

I tried rapping the coil around the mesh but it kept shorting out my vamo and I would have to keep powering it back on and then the device was getting really warm and didn't want to over work it. but I will try again today I am almost out of juice right now and have to go get some. lol.

maybe a pic of the build will help everyone?

I have 2 DIDs and had an AC9... I absolutely love the RSST! It's super easy to set up. Here it is with 28g, metering at .8ohms. See how the wire hugs the wick.. no part of the wire is NOT touching the wick.. not too tight, not too loose. Looking at this build close up.. it looks like the second loop has a tiny gap in it, but it must be a play of the light because there is no gap. This thing is a breeze to set up. I wrapped this coil with the coil in the wick hole. When I first got it, even though I washed it, I was getting a funny taste. I washed it again and dipped the tank in alcohol and washed it again. The funny taste went away. Worth the money? Oh yea :D

Looks almost identical to an RSST set up pic I posted a couple weeks ago. The RSST is tough to beat.

That's a great photo and will help me a lot. Any chance we could see the same setup, but on the other side of the wick?

sure :)

This $30 RSST performs just as well (if not better) and is MUCH easier to set up than my $100 DIDs :glare:

I'm using a straw wick, not a lot of mesh was used so it's rolled pretty loose. I did flame the top of it for a few seconds, no juice burns and finished the oxidation with a mech.. super easy. This wick as been in use for a few weeks now. The coil was done today. It fit pretty good in the wick hole but since it's hollow, it'll leak like crazy if it's on it's side. It wicks so well that I have to turn it to the side (wick facing sideways instead of down) sometimes as I vape or it kinda gives that "overwicking gurgle". When I turn it to the side, the gurgle stops immediately. The wick is 400.

Thanks a heap for the photo! I wanted to see the run from the negative screw up/over to the wick. That seems to be my current hurdle; I don't do that right and that screws up the rest of my wrap. I'm still having problems with small areas of no contact with the wick.

All these photos help a lot gang. Keep 'em coming! I hope to post some more myself when I get this mastered.

The washer/spring connection makes all the difference in ease of setup. When I set this one up, I tested it before cutting the excess wire. I did have a bit of the hot leg at the top but since I hadn't trimmed my wire, all I had to do was adjust the tension. It was a bit too tight. once I did that, all the coils lit up perfectly. I'm using 28g wire, it's much harder (for me) to work with since it's thicker than the 30g.. but I wanted a .8ohm build so I have to use the 28g. Using 28g on a rba with nuts on the pos post is a real pain to get right but on the rsst, it's a breeze. I'm wanting to get some springs and washers to use on my DIDs to make them easier to set up... but finding the right sizes takes trial and error and I'm not willing to keep ordering different sizes and waste money on wrong sizes. So I just keep using the nuts on the DIDs.

Need help with my RSST!!!

Recently got one and started playing around with RBA's. My coils came out pretty good IMO and all are glowing evenly. Read out at 1.0 ohms, one at 1.2 ohms using 28g Kanthal with a 4/3 wrap on 500 mesh.

Im using 12mg Juicy Fruit juice, which is my ADV on my carto-tank/clearo's. On the RSST, this thing hits like a truck, to the point where I can only take one vape from it if that, then I have to put it down and drink a gallon of water.

Do I just need to lower the Nic content? Drill out the air hole?

Also, I dont seem to be getting as much vapor as in some of the videos i've seen, or even compared to my carto-tank. What gives? No hot spots that I can see, contact is pretty good from wire-wick as its not too tight or too loose.

Also, Im using my RSST on a Smoktech Telescoping mod with an Efest 18650 Battery.

I LOVE the flavor on this thing, as well as how it looks, and I want to use it so much more, but the major kick to the back of my throat makes it unvapeable. HELP!

Edit: Forgot to add, the PG/VG Ratio of the juice is unknown to me as its from my local B&M who states that their liquids contain less PG. The juice is thicker than most of the 80/20 that I've purchased elsewhere.

The only things I can think of are one, make sure your air hole is lined up with your wick and coil. Even if it's slightly off it can reduce your vapor and increase the throat hit. And two, how is your wick wicking your juice.

And regarding the wick hole I drilled mine out to 1.2 mm. This will give you an airier draw and more vapor and is really a matter of personal preference. 1.2mm works well for me.

Just a bit of a correction to avoid any confusion...I think you meant air hole, not wick hole.
