tough on the shingles being walked on in this type of weather ..................

You do it from the ground. The roof rake looks like a giant plastic "hoe" only it's a show shovel on a real long light-weight pole....GF's is plastic shovel and aluminum pole...about 24 feet long.

Don't want ice dams messing with stuff.

We get two every year (one front, one back). Do not know what else to do. I don't think any MORE insulation can be jammed into those spots in the attic. Last alternative would be that zig-zag heating wire, which looks like hell... and a lot of roofers nay-say using it. As long as it's a SLOW melt, there is no problem. Last leak was 2007 (in the back)... but that was a FAST warm-up along with rain. The problem valley in the back gets no sun whatsoever from mid-December through mid-March.

Atty: Yes re: pucks. However, the back gutter (LONG and extremely shallow pitch) is full and solid. Not sure where the melt would go.

If they are just calcium chloride, I can toss some up there and see what happens.

As mentioned, if nature takes it slowly then there should not be any problem(s). But I am POSITIVE that over the years, melt has traveled over gutter, along soffit, down the interior wall. Right under that is a kitchen window that will be replaced this Spring/Summer... it was a MAJOR source of draft this Winter. I am SURE more than just the window will need repair/replacement.
