There are ways to run XP within Windows 8.1 for old software. It runs in a "virtual machine". I run a linux box that way under my 8.1. Your IT dept should be able to tell you more. Ask them about "Hyper-V and Win 8.1 and XP".

Saves having to reboot all the time and switch around.

Good deal, I knew it was possible with windows 7, but I wasn't sure if i could run 8.1 in virtual XP mode. that will make life easier
i got the touchscreen too. now if only it would ship. I ordered through amazon prime, so it's supposed to get here tomorrow.

My last one died at almost exactly 5 years, at the same time as some other 5 year old computers...but it seems that obsolescence is being forced by lack of support even if the built in self-destruct doesn't happen.

I worked with XP mode on the computers we take down to the island. I know it's a virtual machine, not compatibility, but this early in the day i don't have the vocabulary capacity to use the correct terminology- or least i'm saving the my limited brain cells for the lecture that i have to give at 8am. But, since i know that the virtual machine works in 8.1, i can make sure it happens. It ain't me who will be setting it up
