BEAR...I think you'll appreciate this: Sometime last year (all I remember is I was on crutches) I had a roofer come in and fix a couple of small leaks. We had a recent tornado + hailstorm last week. The night of, I was at a friend's house during the storm. When I came home, I noticed a small puddle on my living room floor.

When speaking to the roofer all those moons ago, I tried to stress that he consider more than just resealing the particular joint (90° spot where roof meets roof window that sticks out from the vaulting) that he thought was the culprit.

Hey ATTY! Here's something for you...

I received the insurance submission claim for the recent visit to the "sleep center". They billed the insurance provider $2,350 for the CPAP unit + humidifier unit (which makes my coinsurance $117.50 if the provider goes along with that claim). That same machine and humidifier can be bought through CPAP USA for $879 (which would make my coinsurance $43.95)... and you just KNOW they are STILL making money on THAT price.

I will now wait to see what the insurance provider expects me to pay (ie: what they allow the "sleep center" to charge them, times 5%). If it ends up being more than $50, I'll start making a ruckus.

Almost landscaper time! :)

... and the rain arrived 01h20 as we were out looking over the work area and making last-minute changes. Wet bear.

So he ended up making a really neat suggestion that will make the new patio/paver area really stand out. Right now, there is deck... one step down... then step down again to ground level. And that's where I had planned for the "patio" area to be, ground level. But he suggested making the patio area level with the now-intermediate step (thus getting rid of it, completely). Which is a Good Thing because I will - at LEAST once a year - totally miss that step and end up in a crumpled heap* on the ground. Then, where the patio area ends out in the yard, run a timber along the edge to make a step UP onto the patio. Nutshell: raised patio as opposed to ground-level patio.

And there was no mention of additional cost. Was that HIS responsibility to tell me?... or MINE to ask???

* - And the older I get, the more crumpled I am while lying on the ground dazed and bewildered and cursing the passage of time. Not a Good Thing.

Now hailing.

The source spot for leaks is always so difficult to pinpoint - unless it's an obvious gaping hole. We have two spots that always - always - get serious ice damming. There is no more room for additional insulation. None. Luckily, only one spot lets water in... and that is into the basement as opposed to living area. But, still. It's been re-roofed (tear-off) and water still gets in, so we are stumped. We will find out next Winter if heat wire will help. I put it on too late this year for a "real" test.

your responsibility! ;)

and whatcha doing missing a step? :?:

Hmmm... mine, huh? Well, I'll find out when it comes time to settle the bill. I told him a month or so ago that I thought the price for the around-the-deck wall sub-project was quite a bit higher than anticipated. Maybe this new idea will be shoehorned into the overall cost of everything. Actually, he gave no indication this change would be ANY additional work since the patio area needs excavation anyway... now just LESS digging down.

I always miss steps!!! It could be the last step when going down to the basement (crumpled heap on concrete) or the step leading down from the raised section of the house to the lower level (crumpled heap on carpet). It's like they are just not there at times. I dunno. Is there a name/word for that??? Beside "klutz"???

ahhhh...bear, what was once mine is not yours?

I'm gonna get some Flexi-Seal and if that doesn't work, sue Flexi-Seal :p

Ok, not really. what really sux is that my dad monopolized the roofer's time by bringing him along to FL so he could paint my dad's house. And while I can get any old roofer, this one apparently owes my dad...and now me. :D

@Bear Re: Billing

The whole HC thing is a huge cash cow. Mooo.
It's the expense side that has to be handled. Some of the litigation side too (although that's a lot smaller than people think).

Yeah....it's big BIG BIG business. And too often, the actual doctors don't get crap.

And ACA does NOTHING to reduce this "overbilling". It's still going on. True REFORM would address that and the price for prescriptions... and maybe make prescription drug advertising verboten. The ads are incredibly annoying anyway (except that Axiron one... yeah... hmmm... mmmmm!!!).

My Dad suggested that (he keeps pen and paper handy while watching TV) and said I should just Flexi-Seal the entire area to within an inch of its life. MY question is: how does it hold up to UV over time? I am just GUESSING it will dry out and crack with age. Then what? Put more on OVER the old stuff?... or get up on the roof and scrape it all off first (doing lord-knows-what to the shingles).

He also thinks "Clear TV" can replace his cable service that I now cover for him.

Yeah. He didn't even "go there". If you think this ACA was hard to get passed, try interfering with that other cash cow.....

ACA flew through with NO obstacles, right??? A midnight signing into law?

There should be a "Kelly Blue Book" for medical costs. A typical MD visit = "$X"... a script for penicillin = "$Y"... heart bypass = "$Z". No-haggle pricing. MAYBE an allowance for geographic location. But still: obliterate advertising, print or TV.

And yeah... dinner...

...and watch my step.
