Our friend who's bandage I just replaced went in for back surgery a few months ago. One surgery turned into 3 and she is now on heavy duty pain meds. The doctor admitted to making a mistake. She is thinking about suing.

I hope it wasn't for spinal fusion. I *almost* went through that in '05... until I did research. Low low low success rate (ie: any improvement), much "no improvement", and a LOT of "worse". Nope... no-sir-ee. I just made some changes to "body mechanics" and a conscious change in overall posture. Fine since.

any back surgery is pretty high risk. i never forget what my doctor at the hospital for special surgery in nyc told me years ago. you don't consider surgery unless you can't function as is and all other remedies have been explored.

still cleaning but i'm popping in because i keep forgetting to announce the birth of TWO squashes! :lol:
that'll make a total of 3 for this season! :D

Earlier today, something went "DING!" re: pension lump sums. I seemed to recall that if a retiree decided to take accrued pension as a lump sum, the amount received will be based actuarially with some interest rate as a determinant. In other words: it's like taking a lump sum lottery win... nowhere near the advertised amount.

The company had two pension plans... one was nicknamed "traditional" and the other called "cash balance". It's been confirmed that the above lump sum "gotcha" is definitely part of the traditional plan... in which I was NOT a participant. Nobody seems to know if the "gotcha" also applies to the "cash balance" plan. I am going by my feeble and fading mind in remembering that "what you have is what you have" as being one of the selling points for choosing the cash balance option.

::shrug::

Guess I'll find out when the paperwork arrives... or if any of my other contacts finds out before that time.
