starting the generator could probably wait till morning, frannie - the woodstove will keep you warm. not that your temps are gonna be much better then but at least there'll be daylight.
y'all stay safe - while i went
through a couple of blizzards in nyc they were never coupled with power loss.
@ atty - i thought most battery packs provide several hours of power?
IDK. Hard to tell. I know the VA rating. But it doesn't let me know how efficient the UPS is...The thing is they are doing constant DC->AC conversion to supply the outlets probably without any drain (not sure), so there's probably some loss while "simulating" a sine wave. They say 2 minutes of power at 375 watts, and 8 minutes at 1/2 power....and IDK with this cable modem...it says .5 amps MAX so that's 60 watts max I assume (probably less)....
But it's enough to not lose phone service during an emergency and call 911 if needed (Let's say someone rams their car into the POWER POLE outside and I need to call ambulance. Would be bad without a backup.) and to deal with power going off for a few minutes.
Can always run for the cell phone, find it, use it too. But having that extra time (I'd say at least 10 minutes) is important to me. Who knows, it may last for hours.
The internal battery option (extra $35.00 from Comcost) is probably more efficient...but it's a single-tasker. Why would I want to buy a proprietary battery for an older DOCSIS 2.0 modem? I'd rather have a general purpose UPS even if it's just a small one. Came in under $50.00 after tax. So it's an OK option for me.
