We have now mailed out all the gift cards to the 150 survey responders. If you are receiving this email, you were not in the first 150 to take the survey.
If you did not see it, here is the message that we posted on Reddit.com:
Re: E-cigarette Online Survey
From: Dr. Herb Severson from Oregon Research Institute.
First, let me assure you that the e-cigarette study is a legitimate research study funded by the National Institutes of Health. This study was designed to obtain basic information regarding e-cigarettes users and this information was to be used in developing other research around e-cigarettes. We conducted focus groups with e-cigarette users who then helped us design the online survey. We received funding to pay 300 participants. 150 people completed the survey a few weeks ago and they were each sent the $25 gift card. We opened the survey again on 9/23/13 and had a mechanism in place to limit participants to an additional 150 people. We are investigating the reason that more than 2000 people had access to the survey and completed it in a very short amount of time. We take this very seriously. -We have no indication that your personal information entered into the survey was compromised, but it does appear that our survey counter was circumvented.
We can only pay the first 150 legitimate people who completed the survey. We can only pay people for completing the survey one time. If you completed the survey more than one time, we cannot pay you a 2nd time. If we do not pay you, we will not use your survey results. If, as some on Reddit.com have proposed, you want us to use your survey results without payment, please respond and let us know by email.
We appreciate your supportive comments and positive suggestions for future research. We thank you for your commitment to sharing honest information about the use of e-cigarettes and hope that we can continue this research in the future.
