at least one disaster averted! went to town under a cloudless sky yesterday leaving my hot spot sitting on my porch table (yup, atty, i listened to you and give it plenty of time outside) and yeah, you guessed it! a downpour! 
it spent all night in front of the heating vent and, bless its little heart, it's chugging along this morning!

I have to get an early start today. Partly to set up for an experiment before i teach today, and partly to decorate a coworker's desk with red, white and blue streamers. He's from Russia, but took his citizenship exam Tuesday and his citizenship oath yesterday. I've known him since he first came to the states as a post doc when i was still a grad student. He's very happy to be a US citizen now
