i posted there... ;)

Good morning Atty.

Grrrr. Will use the "click on person's avatar and 'view forum posts' thing."

Done.

Meh.

70% of people smoked in the 50's and mostly survived surgery. How fast is fast? How slow is slow. Frigg'n doctors can just deal with nic addicts. Part of doing business.

I could see "no smoking". Or "no vaping 12 hours before surgery and 6 after" or whatever. But...other than that, except in certain special cases, it's B.S. Mostly a knee-jerk reaction to nicotine.

(Best guesses. I'm sure I'll hear all the contradictions to my argument .... and I wouldn't say this in that thread and counter the doctor though.)

the only place where I'm partly convinced that nicotine might cause problems is in bone healing- mostly because there are some studies that show the mechanism. But even with those, not every study shows an effect. The positive effects of nicotine on angiogenesis are pretty well documented, and that's a good thing in most cases. I personally wouldn't worry too much about the effects of nic for surgery that's not related to bone stuff.

(I almost posted my response here, instead of on the thread Mad linked, but then i figured that there was enough misinformation on the thread that I'd go ahead and let it be ignored there)

Yep!!!

I was hospitalized in 2005 with a MAJOR sciatica attack. (Five days in hospital JUST to get pain under control.) The neurosurgeon wanted to do immediate spinal fusion. But then he saw on my record that I was/am a smoker. You should have HEARD the hateful spewing that came out of his facial orifice. I was astounded. I was also told I'd have to put up with the pain for six months until I became nicotine-free because of the bone healing problem.

I ended up with a spinal cortisone injection (oh so MUCH fun!) and sent home on day 5 (with my beloved Dilaudid). And I quit smoking. But it also gave me time to research spinal fusion. A lot of research.

Needless to say, I immediately began to smoke again and took other "remedies" to heart. Mostly "body mechanics" and self physical therapy. No problems since... but even to this day, I await the sciatica return. My right foot is STILL numb... I believe there was major nerve damage there.

Also: I never received ANY kind of bill for that entire episode. No ambulance, no co-pays, no bill from the hospital. Not a cent.

Good morning Bear

Glad that you were able to (mostly) resolve it without surgery or a bill. if you'd had the surgery then, you might be gearing up for a second surgery right about now. I seem to remeber from somewhere that once you've had back surgery, you might as well plan on having it again every 5 years or so (though i could be making that up).

Anyway, it's that time. The sooner i get to work and get stuff done the sooner i might be able to come home. See y'all later

Yes, and I should get outside and start lawn clean-up. :censored:-hag friend says her ex may show up today to reattach the piece of siding, but I'm not holding my breath. I'll either end up doing it myself (crawling on hands and knees on the roof) or just saying ":censored: it!" and letting it go. It can only be seen from a very small angle. (I'm just concerned about wind and moisture getting into the open space and down behind the lower siding.)

It's always something.
If it's not one thing, it's another.
