Most of the northeast uses oil, Chris. I'm not sure about new construction though, probably natural gas, if they are smart. It would cost me over 10 grand to convert to gas, so I stay with oil and use it sparingly.

Our house is heated by the wood stove on the front porch most of the time. Furnace kicks in overnight when the stove dies down or in real cold weather.

Not here, Fran, gas is cheaper. Oil is almost $4 a gallon. It's time that the gubmint takes oil off of the commodities market.

i've been reading (between posts) an article about the utility rates down here....apparently our rates are out of line with the rest of the country and not in a good way. but, basically, i just keep my house cold and wear lots of layers.
