Just one more counter area to clear off, clean, and be picky about what goes back. Unfortunately, it's where every other "extraneous" item went during the rest of the cleaning. And you can blame it ALL on Husbear. He is bordering on being a hoarder... whereas I say "the less, the better". I like open SURFACES in my kitchen.

I see you keep your paper towel roll "vertical" as well. But your holder looks very substantial. The one we have is a cheesy plastic thing on the wall... and when you (or guests) try to "rip one off" (
) , the roll pulls off, bounces off the counter and scoots across the kitchen... leaving a trail of paper towel in its wake. The thing is... I do NOT want anything MORE on the counters.
And ETA:
I really DO want the counters to be FREE of ANY clutter. A couple appliances here and there. But ANYTHING else is just in the way. For me.

Hubby was lucky today. He went to Home Depot in Keene for some glue and then he was going to the car wash but changed his mind. If he had gone to the car wash he would have been it the middle of a horrible accident. Tanker truck vs car,2 dead,truck on fire. Roads are still closed to traffic.
No boards. I think all is planed for what we need to trim the doors and big window.
Horizontal surfaces exist to hold things against the force of gravity. If it were not so, they would be vertical or inclined. Thus, you are preventing them from fulfilling their destiny....
