I am new to this but loving it. My eyes get glazed over when people talk about all the technical builds, so I am quite the noob. I am using a Kanger IPOW 2. It's been a week of vaping, and the last day or two I am noticing when I take a draw, I hear and feel a crackling and popping that I didn't notice when I first started. Also, the device feels a little hot sometimes, although I admit I am vaping a LOT more since I have some delicious juices now. What's up with that?

Snapping, crackling and popping means your e-liquid turned into Rice Crispies.

No, it's perfectly normal, it's just your coil working correctly as it vaporizes the e-liquid around it. A crackling coil is a happy coil.

If you are getting e-liquid in your mouth because of this popping, you can try to turn your device down so less power is delivered to the coil.

As for your device getting warm, that's normal too - assuming the heat is near the top of it where your tank or topper screws in and it's just a general warmth and it's not getting hot.
However, if your battery is getting hot, that's a different matter and could be serious. If that happens, remove the topper and stop using the battery.

Hi Evolver and welcome to the forum!

That snap, crackle and pop you are hearing is the coil getting too hot and explosively (not dangerous) vaporizing your juice.

A couple of things can be happening:

  • You have your wattage set too high for your new, more intensive style of vaping, and the wicking isn't keeping up
  • Your juice has gunked up the coil - coils do get dirty and have to be cleaned or changed once in a while

If the juice is still tasting good, then you still have a clean coil. If that's so, try lowering the wattage. It's a balancing act to getting it right. When your style changes or you change juices, start off with a low power setting, take a few draws, then up the power a notch and draw again. Keep doing that until the flavor decreases or you start getting dry hits (burnt taste). Then lower the power back a notch. That's the "sweet spot" for your vaping style with that equipment and juice combination.

Hope that helps and Happy Vaping!

PS, it might seem like InTheShade's post and mine conflict - actually, they don't.

A minor amount of snap, crackle, pop IS normal as InTheShade said. I was assuming you may have had a LOT of SNP.

Sorry if I confused things.

It's all good Rsunderl, we both assumed different things from the OP's post.

Good info given, OP hasn't smoked in a week - win, win.

While we're on the topic, anyone notice that the crackle is more (specifically for RDA's) after a night of sitting with juice on the coils? I've noticed that the first puff I take in the morning -- whether it's off a fresh battery or not is irrelevant, since my box bucks/steps down/up despite battery voltage -- is usually the most crackly, specifically if I dripped before I went to bed and didn't vape off all the juice. I've sort of gotten into the habit of firing my RDA before I stick it in my mouth in the morning, just to get that one crazy pop out of there.

It's never really much of a problem, but it is something I notice. Also if it's any help to the matter, I vape a .55 ohm coil at 4.8v.

I've always thought that was due to condensate dripping back down from the drip tip onto the coil - so that first vape has a lot of water that causes the loud popping and spitting - I could be wrong about this though.

I do know if I forget and fire it close to my face, it can be quite loud and make me jump a little. Maybe I am skittish, or maybe I like my face...

I think that the popping being more loud after having juice sitting on it over night is due to like two things that are kind of 1. The juice around the coil usually stays warm /room temp as you vape during the day cuz u keep firing the coil. When you let it sit over night the juice around the coil cools, coating it good. So when you fire it up again, its the vapor breaking through that coating that causes the big pops and crackles. I think this is what also leads to gunking. If you have warm juice 24/7 is hard to imagine that it would stick or solidify on anything ... but once it cools you add another layer or a few to the gunk problem.

Thanks everybody. It is so helpful to be able to get really good advice about vaping! Maybe I will clean or change my coil. Sometimes it seems no vapor is coming out, and only once did it taste funny. Then it starts working fine again. I am using 4 Watts. This new juice I have is so delicious, I am vaping a lot more now than when I started.

There are many drip tips. I don't really use plastic because I like a cooler vape. I'm not sure what the actual difference is since it is a minor amount of cooling, but I use metal (aluminum, SS, etc). I just got a 2" drip tip that seems good, but I haven't tried it on much.

As a note; some metals are not pure. Nice to tinker.
