tbh i dont even know what a hipster is. to me it just seems like a derogatory term people use to name 20 something year olds that dont dress like the average person or are open about going green. the only thing dumb about hipsters is the people who use the word in a derogatory way.

Here ya go Alice, though the looking glass How to Spot a Hipster

Haven't read the whole thread, I might, we'll see.

No offense, but it bothers me when someone says No offense, and then continues to be as offensive as politely possible.

I don't think I'm a hipster, unless I'm so ahead of it being cool that I don't know it. I do wear thick framed ray-ban glasses, but they're actually prescription. I don't have a beard, unless I'm too lazy to shave for a couple weeks. I do drip pretty much exclusively, but because I like the flavor, and the cloud to some extent, though I'm not a "cloud chaser." I vape to not smoke, I'm only in my thirties, but vaping has helped me kick a 20 year smoking habit. If I go into a vape shop, it's to try out some liquids or buy something, not to hang out, I have other things to do.

Long story short, if the shop employees are being rude, shop elsewhere. If you don't like the clientele of a shop, get over it.

Dunno anything about "hipsters", honestly. I live in a part of the country where minimum wage craft jobs and recycling are the norm. And we raise sheep and goats for wool and milk, so wool hats... yeah. Can't bike, though... no bike lanes and narrow, rough roads.

That said, I have my iStick 20, and a decent enough dual coil glassomizer, and I have no interest in dripping (that's a medical condition, if you ask me), and no money to spend on massive rigs. Also, I started vaping to quit smoking (and it worked! My non-smoking, non-vaping wife now allows me in the house - hurrah!). If I start blowing clouds and obscuring parts of the room with fog, I'll likely have to go outside again.

Now, if I win a contest with a big mod and rda and a gallon of good juice, that might all change...

it is derogatory but these people don't have to be in their 20's, hipster is the average person these days though, they all look the same, tight jeans, chucks or chukka boots, wool hats or old school new balance type shoes

you'll know them when someones a hipster when you hear them talk, they will talk down to someone but not in a straight forward way, they go about it in an attempt to sound intellectual but you can see past this nonsense because they tend to not be very bright on the subject that they think they are, they'll use the same goofy big words to explain something over and over again

tbh i dont even know what a hipster is. to me it just seems like a derogatory term people use to name 20 something year olds that dont dress like the average person or are open about going green. the only thing dumb about hipsters is the people who use the word in a derogatory way.

For reference, hipsters are generally characterized by:

1. Intentional non-conformity, less out of inherent beliefs but out of a need to be contrarian.

2. Wearing fashion and choosing brands "ironically."

People joke about them all looking the same, but there's some theory and a mathematical model for it. A neuroscientist at Cornell published a paper documenting the "hipster effect" or "hipster loop":

[1410.8001] The hipster effect: When anticonformists all look the same

The PDF of paper is pretty great:
http://arxiv.org/pdf/1410.8001v1.pdf

This involved neurons, and how some fire whenever others are quiet, and whenever others are firing they're quiet. They're intentionally contrarian from the main group of neurons... hipster neurons.

So at some point, the hipsters notice something is becoming a trend - let's say mustaches - and they all immediately move away from mustaches... but they're oblivious to the fact that they're *all* moving away from it as they detect it. So then much of them don't have mustaches. Repeat this pattern with various fashion/brand/beliefs and to an outsider, while they're trying very hard to be different huge swaths of them look the same. It's kind of the definition of irony.

Anyways, now that you have a formal definition, carry on.

to me, i could care less how one dresses even if you do look like a weirdo...but it's when the hipster talks is what drives me bonkers, especially when it's something i'm fairly knowledgeable about because they come off as a know it all, it's more in the attitude than anything

went to brooklyn last year and thought i was going to lose my mind by how these people would speak

I don't mean to offend anyone, and I kind of went on a tangent about this in the e-liquid forum when I mentioned 100% vg juice so sorry if it is repetitive, but I thought I'd mention it here. We have a vape culture here that really bothers me. The epitome of it would be this downtown craft beer bar/vape lounge full of condescending hipsters dripping. Anyone who does not drip is inferior, and when I asked if they have any vg-only eliquid as I have a hard time with pg-containing liquids, the employee told me vg-only is only for dripping (is that a pretty widely held belief? I use 100% vg in my clearo and it clogs coils up quickly but hey, I prefer the vapor). I do not drip because I have a 1 year old son and do not want bottles of liquid sitting around. Also, I am vaping as a healthier and, for me, cheaper alternative to smoking, and I get dirty looks for having an ego-style battery (vision spinner 2 is it right now, getting back into vaping after reverting to smoking for a while). It's not about the way people choose to dress, or the fact that they like craft beer, it's the fact that they are "cooler" than anyone who chooses differently. I don't think I'll ever go back into that shop because of the attitude.

Well... If you drink bud light you are pretty much a mouth breather that puts A-1 on a filet lol. With this I agree with the hipsters.

As far as vaping... every time I tell people that I switched from smokes to vaping they all say the same thing... "Oh, you are a hipster now?"

Am I wearing a wool beanie in July? Do I have a Spam t-shirt on? Am I wearing purple glasses with no lenses?

Dafawk man?
