So a co-worker (52-55 year old woman) went to the doctor today to get a ringing in her ears checked.

While she was there he asked if she was a smoker, she told him she had been for over 40 years but had recently switched to ecigs. She asked him if there was any benefit to doing this in which he replied.

Well you are getting the same nicotine, and implied the same cancer risk. Who knows whats in that juice you are using, and while it may smell better to the people around you it is the same or maybe worse than just smoking itself. Instead of puffing on that when you feel the need for nicotine do 5 mins of exercise(she is not obese) and the craving will be gone.

She now feels that ecigs are doing the same harm to her without the smell as her old analogs. He told her as long as any nicotine is in her body the risk is the same.

Now I have read and tried to explain it to her, but being 20 some years younger than her, she believes her doctor and I need some supplementary data to prove that while it is bad, it isn't as bad, or I fear she may just drop the ecigs completely. I need something I can print out to show her that while we all agree they aren't the best option they do have some merit to them.

She needs a second opinion. Its not the nicotine that is harmful in analogs but the 4000 other chemicals he summarily dismissed while giving his poor advice.

I tried to explain that to her. I told her that nicotine in itself has had a study to show that it is on the same level as caffeine. It's the tar, the arsenic the formaldehyde and the other burning chemicals that cause the cancer itself.

I asked if he recommended the Nicorette inhaler or any other substance in which she said no and got the exercise reply. So at least he's not recommending things with worse chemicals, he's just 100% hard ... no nothing.

KageyK, your co-worked should decide for herself, if she feels better vaping, as opposed to smoking. It's really to bad that she puts that much faith in her Dr and none in herself.

If she has a computer at home, she can research nicotine herself, as well as the other 3 ingredients in her juice; PG, VG and flavor. I think the information she finds will bring her some peace of mind.

Would it be same to assume she's aware, that nicotine, at the levels used in e-cigs, is no more dangerous then caffeine.

Of course all Doctors would like you to stop putting anything in your lungs...
Mine Doc say's something like this: when you vape your lungs will create flam to protect themselves... not good.
So I ask, How not good?..He say's.. well your lungs do that already cause you live in NYC... The pollutants in the E-Cig ..will.... lets put it this way, it's like living in NYC twice...
Alan
I can live with that... way better then smoking... not as good as staying away from e-cigs & moving to the country ... but definitely a billion trillion trillion times better then a real cigarette
& I have yet to find a cigarette that tastes as good as Ms T's Vanilla Custard ... damm.. now I'm a Vaping Vanilla Custard addict... what to do? what to do?

All I know is I've had same doctor for 10 years and he knows I smoke, or at least used to now, my point is, most doctors don't need to ask if u smoke unless it's a first meeting, or it's been a long time between meetings. I also believe most doctors like to give u medications that they get a kickback on. So same with some of their advice.

The majority of doctors are a sad, sorry, and self opinionated bunch that really don't have the patient's best interests at heart IMHO.

And all this came about from an appointment for a bout of tinnitus ? How strange I must say, lol.

Yeah that's what she went in for, turns out she doesn't have it and he described what she had as sort of similar to an eye twitch but in her ear.

Thanks for the link. I'll have her look at that if she feels like ecigs aren't making a difference or if she wants to know more.

Grrr. Ignorant doctors piss me off so. :(
We vapors could sure use a simple, easily read brochure to pass out as needed, one that is well referenced, pointing out the vast advantages of e-cigs and debunking the myths, and with direction where to followup with more detailed information on the net such as CASAA and this forum.

My doctor told me the same, that e-cigs are bad because it's the nicotine that's harmful. I just kept my mouth shut and considered him uninformed.....here's his comment...."Unfortunately, nicotine is the main culprit and health risk, so if it contains nicotine, then the risk should be the same. If it doesn't have nicotine, what's the point? Better to check on a pencil or celery sticks! (As a former heavy smoker, I can relate though.)"

I received the same response: "But you're still using nicotine." To which I responded: "Yeah but without all the blah blah blah." Still got the look of disapproval. Oh well, won't deter me one bit. I don't need their approval. I've always thrown my prescriptions for antibiotics in the garbage unless it was an absolute must. Won't even get into how much I distrust the medical profession, or even tell everyone how they caused me to have surgery, followed by a pulmonary embolism, drowned me in antibiotics, cost me hundreds of dollars and made me loose 2 months in wages, and generally ruined my entire summer due to bad and lazy and sloppy work on their part.

However for those that think doctors are gods who can do no wrong, well no sense preaching to them, they've been brainwashed at too early an age and it's up to them to look outside the box.

I'm thrilled that my Doc is open minded, and supports my vaping. He usually suggests an alternative/natural remedy to health issues.

He hit the roof a few years ago, when a local Doc in the emerge room put me on blood pressure meds. He went so far as to call him an "effing pill pusher"

Not all doctors are ignorant of the different/new, unfortunately, too many are though.
