Tools for winding the completely by hand way:

#1 AN OHM METER!
then
Drill bits ranging in diameter from 1.58mm - 3mm
Kanthal (LOTS)
some sort of "torch flame" lighter
wire cutters
tweezers, preferably with a rubber grip so you dont burn your fingers

I have a dumb question.

When my coil starts tasting like it needs replacing, do I always change the wire and the cotton, or just the cotton?

If the wires are still good, no need to replace them. Just more cotton. If you wick is burnt, it means it's gotten too hot, either because it wasn't wicking well and got dry, or you're applying too much heat. I find I replace perfectly good coil wires all the time. But I'm always hunting for something different, or tweaking. Wire is cheap, and building coils is fun

I'm with suprtrkr.... I will pull the wick, quick dry-burn to get some gunk off and then rewick n reload.

Building coils is quite awesome. You can keep it simple or venture off to kooky-coil land. Ohmmeter and healthy understanding of Ohm's Law, and the cape world is yours!
