Finally on a vaping-related message board. I've been a heavy smoker (a pack a day, is that a 'heavy' smoker? I don't know. Heavier than I wanted to be, though) since I was 19 -- just turned 37 on the 7th of this month. I had tried a couple different substitutes for cigarettes; mainly Swedish snus (Swedish Match Lab Series #02 and Northerner Boost) and a couple different e-Cigs -- but not good e-Cigs.

My first was a Red Dragon -- it came with only 2 prefilled cartridges. One of them didn't work at all, dead in the box. The other tasted like... well, I never could identify what it tasted like, exactly, but it tasted bad. No throat hit, little vapor, and I would have preferred no flavor to whatever it was that thing tasted like.

My second e-Cig was one a former roommate got me from a convenience store down on the corner. As you might expect, that was no better. The battery ended up dying after a week of normal use.

Currently, I have a Blu starter kit -- the older model, not the "smart pack." Just a regular ol' "dumb pack." :) The battery life is atrociously wimpy, but at least it works. I've recently dipped my toe in the DIY scene by -- hold onto your shorts, folks -- refilling the Blu carts when they die. A friend of mine, to whom I gave the second Blu battery and the USB charger, bought a sampler pack of Halo e-juices. In trade for the battery and charger, he kicked down to me the HX3 and Captain Jack samples, and I've been happily vaping on those for a few days now. Far and away, this has been the best, most effective vaping I've experienced so far, but I don't plan to quit here.

Money permitting (which probably won't be for a while, since I'm a starving writer) I'll be upgrading my PV to an Ovale eGo-C and diving into Halo juices at the 30ml level with Bella Valente and HX3, since I've heard nothing but good about the former and know the latter to be awesome.

Welcome, John Castle! It sounds like you are off to a great start, nailing down a juice is regarded as the hardest part. I've been vaping full time for 3 months and just this week found my all day vape. What a relief, the stress was quite a burden.

I never had much luck with the cigarette size batteries, but many on here do and there is a lot of positive commentary on the Blu.

Lots of us are trying to launch this endeavor while on a budget and it can be a bit challenging.

Congrats on leaving the analogs behind :toast:

From one John to another, welcome to both ECF and the world of vaping. I started with a JoyeTech eGo C kit and have quickly upgraded everything myself. Still using the batteries and an eGo Twist now. I am still looking for my all day vape, I have lots of favorites so far, but nothing that is the one yet. If you need any suggestions or places to try juice from you will find lots of friendly people and great information in this forum. Make sure you check out the thread showing what places give free samples with an order, nice way to try juices.

I can recommend two places that I love, one being Mountain Oak Vapors Mountain Oak Vapors: Flavorful, unique, and complex USA E-Liquid Blends and if you use the code 'REFERRED' during checkout you get 15% off. The other place is The Vapor Room The Vapor Room.net | Vaporize Nicotine | E Cig Atomizers you get a free sample with each order and first time customers get a free bottle of juice as well. You can tell them what you want as well, fast service from both places and great products.

Good luck on your vaping, stick to it and you will be very happy and once you find the equipment and juice you like.

Welcome to ECF!

Welcome, John! Glad the Blus are working out for you, and best of luck on your endeavor. Seems like everyone has their own way that worked for them quitting the cigarettes, so I think the only thing I'd say is don't stress about it. I got my eGo-C this past Friday and haven't picked up a cig since. My friend Wrenfisher is taking a slower approach, but she's cut way back. Just tonight she had a bedtime vape instead of a cig, not because she felt she should, but because she said she preferred that tonight.

So any way you do it is the right way.

I've got some Capt Jack I'm waiting to try, and have been really liking the Halo Torque. Kinda cherry, with a big thick fallish flavour, and my current favourite for night time. Glad you found some juice that you like already.

Good luck, and welcome to ECF!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. Oddly enough, what's got me into full time vaping is that I'm pretty much poor -- I'm a writer by trade, and there hasn't been much trade to be had lately. For me, it's either vaping or smoking -- not both. So I have a vape before bed instead of a smoke because, well, having invested in an e-cig, I can't afford the real thing. That's not a complaint, though; quite the contrary. I sort of forced myself into that so that I would have no choice but to quit smoking. I figured there was no other way I could do it.

While the Blu was great as "training wheels", I now feel that it's time to up the money-saving by refilling rather than buying 5-packs of prefilled cartomizers at $16 a pack. And, well, a tank system like the eGo-C or perhaps the eLips just sounds like it'd be a hell of a lot more convenient for that than recycling Blu carts is, not least of all because in order to get new carts to drip into, I'd still have to buy the Blu carts at $16/5-pack anyway. Might as well ditch the training wheels entirely, right? :)

Thing is, it's not just the hit-or-miss of refilling Blu carts that's driving me to upgrade -- if it were that, I'd buy Halo blank carts, since from what I can see of their batteries, their carts should fit on my Blu battery. It's that the Blu battery really doesn't give me the vaping time between recharges I'd like. I get 30 to 45 minutes of sporadic vaping -- I usually do 10 good puffs sort of "eyeballing" that to be the equivalent of a cigarette, every 10 minutes or so. I can do that 3, maybe 4 times before the battery wants another 45 minute nap in the PCC. That's not really cutting it.

The other half of the equation is, again, the bother of refilling dead Blu carts. Full disclosure: I only just started doing that last week, and I am by no means expert at it. I've already had to discard a couple of carts that, after I refilled them, there was no vapor, no warmth, no nothing. I probably killed the atomizers in them somehow, either by overfilling, or letting liquid get down the center hole, or who knows what.

If it was just the latter problem, I'd take your suggestion and just get the eGo-C parts you mention. It's not, though -- add in the lackluster Blu battery performance, and it's time for a whole-cloth upgrade -- at least for me.

Welcome John and Michael!

I also started with the Blu, found a video on refilling them, went on the hunt for juice and ended up here. After refilling them a few times, they are done for. I realized I needed MORE than the Blu could provide. I agree with the eGo, but not the tank system. It leaks, I hated it. I am only suggesting this as I have been there, done that and wasted money in the process.

This is the best kit I have found for a starter kit, all you will need to add is juice and a 2nd battery for a backup while the first is charging (or if money doesn't permit, use the Blu's while it's charging until you can grab another eGo).

Mini Starter Kit - 650mah - Black - DiscountVapers.com

This is a steal of a deal, and for newbies only.

GOOD LUCK!

ETA: DO NOT USE THE BLU CHARGER FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE BLU, DO NOT CHARGE THE BLU ON ANY OTHER CHARGER!!! They are reverse polarity and proprietary. VERY IMPORTANT!!! You can use whatever you screw into the Blu battery such as the cartomizer etc, just NOT the charger!

eta #2: the above kit is $20!

I very much appreciate the tip, vsummer, but I'm dead set on upgrading. I've also heard about leaking issues, and supposedly the Ovale eGo-C and Ovale eLips have conquered leak issues. I say 'supposedly' because, although every review I've found of those two systems says so, you just never know until you find out firsthand.

I definitely know that I won't be staying with Blu, and probably won't go for any other system with an automatic battery. That means either Ovale or, maybe, the Halo G6 Manual or Element. Whatever I upgrade to, I want to be damn sure it won't have the paltry battery life I'm getting out of the Blu. That means definitely manual, and probably at least 650mAh, which is why I'm thinking eGo-C. The reason I'm thinking Ovale eGo-C specifically is that theirs is both the best looking I've seen and has the best reviews I've seen. I'm keeping an open mind and continuing to do my homework, though. ;)

John, I think you misunderstand me. Did you check out the EGO KIT on that link? Don't think I haven't upgraded, I already gave my Blu away LOL. I use a Provari now, with my eGo as a backup.

Ths custom kit consists of:

1. (1) eGo 650 mAh battery
2. (1) CE4+ V2 Clearomizers with Long Wicks
3. (1) Charging cable for eGo battery
4. (1) gift Tin with padded pockets

for $20. You can buy an Ovale eGo C specifically, and this one also so you will have one plus a backup, but this will get you the charger you are going to need along with the tank you need. For less than elsewhere.
