So when are you going to become a supplier and start selling some of these wonderful creations?

Master of Bassets...and not much else.

I actually prefer that pdib doesn't become a supplier. His one (or 10) offs are so inspired and unique that the exclusivity of a pdib creation makes it even more special.

This door is a like owning a very rare painting - Except Rather than keep it locked away in a vault, I enjoy it every day on my work horse silver hammertone :)

This is what I'm torn about. :(

On a purely selfish level, I enjoy the accidental nature of it. Coming up with an idea and seeing if I can make it work. The real joy lies in holding an idea in my hand when I'm done . . . . and liking it. Also, I get lots of happy from when my REO compatriots give me the nod on them (pretty much equal to making it). I also like that there's only a few of each kind; and, rather than getting into larger scale production, sourcing materials, quality control, blah blah blah . . .. I'm off to the next idea.

At the same time, I just got to the point where there's enough of them now, and I seem to keep making them, that I'm not going to know what to do with them all. Also, I'm putting enough time and energy into this that, despite the fact that I enjoy giving stuff away, it's becoming impractical. Also, it makes me feel bad when someone would very much like one, and I have to tell them that I don't make these to sell, so "no".

Finally, the doors themselves. They come from a place of child-like excitement and playful obsession. Somehow, in my mind, that doesn't jive with supply and demand. I like what Supe said . . . . . . it captures an element of my unconscious intention.

I'm gonna think on this for a bit. The very same question started bubbling up in my mind at about 2pm yesterday; so, obviously, there's something to decide. As I punch these little black squiggles onto my compu-screen, a couple thoughts come to the surface. One is that I would pro'ly continue to make only a handful of each style (not as a rule, but as my attention span dictates . . . . . . . . "Hey! → squirrel !!!!!!!!!!!!!!") And two, given what I'm doing here, "they is what they is". Not trying to make production line quality control perfection, just having fun.

I sure would appreciate any thoughts, input, experience on this pleasant little dilemna from my fellow REOnauts! :)

Well being of zero experience at this matter I do believe showing these things spawns ideas from others or even using the same idea as a DIY project. I've been thinking about raiding the electrical scrap bin at work to find a circuit board. I've also thought about using some of the oak I have and making a metal woodie. My only problem is not having the man toys to do these things. The wood drip tip you've graced me with is just sick and sports well on the Copper Vein and I love it. I do understand where you're coming from. I like carving pumpkins but I never charge for one as a matter of fact I go in the hole carving them because I buy my own pumpkins. I've never charged because I'm afraid it will become like a job instead of something I just love to do. After that will come the dread of having to do it. I don't do over 30 a year any more but I still love doing it. As long as you have the passion for it, do it and feel well about it.

You gotta do what makes you happy. Sure, we'd all like to have an original pdib creation but thats not practical for you unless you go public. We all would like to have an original pdib cause 1.they are fab 2. you've become a bit of a legend here in reoville. But even if I never get another one, I gotta say, it's hella fun just watching you (and others) do this fine reo modding and I, for one, am very glad ya'll are here.

Not a REOnaut yet, but have always been impressed by your modding abilities and your gracious way of sharing.

Having said that, I understand where you are coming from. I'm currently toying with an idea, vaping related, kinda aimed at the REO, but a little more universal. Could turn into a part time hobby or eventually a more full time business.

For people like you and I (squirrel) the idea of turning a hobby into an income stream kinda takes the fun out of it. For an apparent philanthropist like you, must be even harder.

If I had a REO, wanted one of your doors, I'd happily make a donation to cover the expense.

I own a bicycle shop and I can say it's a very difficult thing to balance my passion for cycles w/the deadlines and demands of people waving their c.c. and sometimes not waving them. I love the freedom of just for fun because no one can complain about this nick or that gap, there just happy to be a part of the fun. When someone hands me cash, their expectations sometimes exceeds what is even possible. The barter system is one that always brings me and another party joy. I also end up with all kinds of things I never thought I needed or trade them for something else fun:)

I hope you can just keep having fun, that's certainly what this is for me, plus I was a hardcore smoker and now I'm more pleasant to be around:D

I've had fun trying out things you've put forth and it's all a great learning experience, Looking forward to more fun stuff. Keep the creative juices flowing!!
thanks for posting, Buddy

Ok, I got in a rush a made a pair of prototypes, just to gat the knack of it with the tools I have. The dark one is some unknown, very dense but prone to splitting wood, the other is Osage orange. They still need final fitting and sanding, but so far I like the process and the feel of it.View attachment 271177View attachment 271178

Those are some sweet doors my friend :)

YAY! That's totally cool, Goose! I want one like that! How are you finding the wood to be holding up where it has to be so thin in the track-glide edges?

Do what is fun and a hobby, once you start doing it for money, it's not longer a hobby, it's work. Do you really want more work? The wife has often said to me "Hey you could make more of those and sell them", the answer is always "no way" I do it for fun to relax and forget about work not to have more work.

The Osage is great as it is really tough if you get the winter growth ring at the edge. The other not so much. I picked up some aluminum and brass sheet today, so I will try gluing the wood to a backing plate that matches the groove height. If it works I can use other stuff like leather or snake skin, sturgeon skin, etc.

Yeah, I got some stabilized from Dennis. I'm gonna try it nekid; but if it seems to weak, I'll have to adhere it to something like that too. Hey, going with your ideas .. . . how 'bout a nice Flounder?

I'm with you 100%! I'm an artist of sorts, and sell my work, but it's only so I can buy more supplies to have fun with. People have suggested doing it full time, but, as you said, I don't want it to be my job. Once I have deadlines and feel pressure to be creating, I think much of the fun will be taken out if it.

Hobby on my friend, hobby on!

I've been looking at Richlite & Paperstone on-line. What thickness are you using for the doors? The Evil One is beginning to show some interest, but may be feigning to shut me up ;)

The Evil Carpenter??? OOOooo. Get her on board, Gig!!!

My EvilOne was a political science major...

...'nuff said
