Rock n' roll, Royal Mounted Canadian! I love the idea of inlay/mosaics! Btw. I coated the back of the door with CA as early in the game as possible. I felt an immediate "strengthening"/stiffening. When I finished the rails, I coated those too. I cropped the corners (tips, tops&bottom cornerlets) of the rails to eliminate that breaking point. When the face was done, I coated that twice with CA (sanding to 1500 between coats), then finished it off with fine furniture wax (2 coats). It ain't perfect, and it ain't strong; but it's just strong enough for me to decide to go without backers on the subsequent ones too. You can't "skateboard" on it, but you can use it without fear (unless you're clumsy . . . . ., D, :p)

LOL. i truly appreciate the warning :)

Pdib, first let me say, all I have seen that you make is phenomenal! You are truly talented. Doing what you love for the fun of it really shows.

From personal experience doing the same thing to someone else's specs &/or expectations can be very stressful & take the fun out of it. I have tried it & it didn't work out for me, I would rather have the enjoyment.

With that said, it would be really sad if I never had a chance to get my hands on one of these beautiful doors you make.

Thanks, Leslv. Your advice is similar to pretty much eveyone else's so far. I think I see a pattern here. :p

I did come to a decision recently, and went and posted it in another thread . . . . sort of .. .

Yeah, that was me. I've been making some doors to satisfy my compulsion to tinker and be "creative". I'll stumble across a particular object or material and wonder if I could make something out of it. (Lately, it's been doors.) I'll make one, or a few, just to play; and that's that. If I've got a few extra, when the dust settles, I'll give them to friends. Sometimes, someone might give me something in the spirit of sharing and of this great little community that has grown around Rob and his Gooseboxes. I'm not making these doors (or anything else, for that matter) in order to sell them. And I don't see myself doing so in the foreseeable future. I don't mind if someone PMs me, asking if I happen to have any extra of something I've made, it's a compliment; that anyone would take interest. Sometimes, I'll have an extra one, and I'm happy to share. In this case, with the circuit boards, I don't have any extra.

Well, now, the wife managed to take a break from rolling her eyes at me just long enough to spot a little block of red stuff in my Dennis Box. She said, "you know, I do kinda like that stuff". (Which, as anyone who's married and has half a brain will tell you, translates to, "make me one of your doors outa that stuff, and I will graciously accept it".) So, I did, and Pinky Tuscadero has a new door.

Here's the rest of her, for context . . . .

So, I gave her the new door, and she actually said she likes it! (and with that tone of voice that means she likes something). And then she proudly proclaimed that nobody's got a mod as cool as hers. (which is, of course, completely a matter of taste and preference . . . . .but, hey, it made me feel good)

Beautiful, dibby! If I didn't already have one, I'd be envious. :D

She said she "likes" it, huh? I bet she secretly loves it. I don't see how anyone who actually has one in hand can not love them. It looks fantastic on pinky.

BTW, I can feel/perceive the curvature of the door when holding it. It's subtle and sublime and feels very comfortable and organic.

I'm cutting a section off the block with a bandsaw. Thicknessing it (crudely) on the 12" disc sander. Sizing on the tablesaw and chopsaw. Rabbetting on the tablesaw with sacrificial fences (table and fence). Squonk hole with drill press (forstner) and 16" scroll saw. Mag. holes with drill press. Face shaping with 2x4, doublestick tape, and 12" disc sander. Hand sanding, filing rails for fit. CA stabilizer coat. (buffing to 2000 grit & flipping to buff w/ paper backer of 2000). Fancy furniture (british museum grade) wax. I think that's all the steps (?).

Oh, is that all? :p

I figured there was quite a bit to it. Very impressive sir.

Here is the finished product of the first attempt. Largely the same process as pdib, only using a backing plate and not nearly as finished! I like the look, and learned a lot for next time. Hand fitting the plate was definitely the hardest part for me, getting the rabbets just right to slide and not wiggle too much. Pdib you continue to inspire!

That looks GREAT, Royal Canadian! What size bit did you use for the squonk hole? (7/8? 1"? I don't think I asked already . . . . did I?)

It definitely makes me want to get my hands on your REO! The tactile factor is so much of it too.
.
7/8" . It is a little small for my thumb, and I am without a scroll saw at the moment, and my Dremel is broken. Sigh. I wasn't feeling the chainsaw files today. I finished it with chopping block oil, which is nearly odorless, and soaks in well. It does have a nice, furniture-like feel to it. Btw the edges on the Osage didn't hold up in the slots. I will try again with more attention to maintaining one growth ring, but it means doing the whole thing with scrapers.
