I would advise using irssi (http://irssi.org/ ) in a screen (screen(1) - Linux man page) as that's the best way ever to IRC! I've been there for a couple months so far, and the peeps be great.

A wilderness it is indeed! I haven't seen a forum as extensive in a while, but maybe that's just because I'm an IRC addict

yes, it is fun, I was kinda disappointed when one of my threads got moved to another section, I was just so comfy and protected - LOL
And while the chat can get busy and be all crazy like, those newb questions really aren't a pain to hear over and over (like some think) we all started somewhere and its good karma to give back
