Hello from Indiana

I'm a long time smoker and a buddy got me interested in vaping though I've never tried it. I'm not a heavy smoker having cut down to 5 or 6 or more per day but I don't enjoy them and want to quit entirely.

I have on order a Subox Mini Kit, some juice and LG HE4 batteries with a Nightcore D2 charger. It's a lot to take in for an old timer and I'm a bit confused with the coil options. I understand that the kit comes with an .5 and an 1.5 ohm vertical OCC coils and an RBA base with a couple of coils and cotton.

Should I be stocking up on extra OCC coils or coils for the RBA or build my own? If I build my own what supplies should I have? I kind of understand rebuilding is the way most people go and would like some advice.

I may be getting ahead of myself a bit but I see a sale on coils and thought I might want to take advantage.

I would buy Japanese cotton pads and either Nichrome or kanthal. 28g kanthal is good for beginners. I despise building on the stupid STM rba base. It hates me. I ordered some extra .5 coils. Hopefully these new vertical ones last awhile. Since you're a beginner to vaping I suggest buying a replacement pack too. Maybe wait to see which ohms you like better. I'm a dumb dumb tho. Don't be afraid to try rebuilding it.

Hello and welcome to the forum @jQuack. Glad to have you here!:)

The 0.5Ω coil is for direct lung inhaling. The 1.2Ω for Mouth-2-Lung. See which one you like before you order more.

Kangertech suggested operating range for their OCC coils.

Horizontal OCC Coils
0.5 Ω coils - 15 watts to 30 watts.
1.2 Ω coils - 12 watts to 25 watts.

Vertical OCC Coils
0.2Ω coils - x watts to 80 watts
0.5Ω coils - 15 watts to 60 watts
1.2Ω coils - 10 watts to 26 watts
1.5Ω coils - 10 watts to 26 watts

Regarding building with the RBA base see this youtube review => Kanger Subox Mini Kit

Wicking Material - Take your pick
  • Organic Cotton Balls
  • Rayon (Cellu-Cotton) - Sally's Beauty Supply
  • Japanese Cotton Pads (Koh Gen Do/Shiseido) - Sephora/Nordstroms - I use these.
Other Tools
  • A1 Kanthal Wire (26 or 28 gauge) - I get mine from Lightening Vapes
  • Ohm Reader
  • Coiling Jig (not necessary BUT very handy)
  • Accessory Screwdriver Set (can be used to wind coils and tighten post screws.
  • Ceramic Tweezers (not needed but nice) or Tweezers
  • Needle Nose Pliers (to squeeze the coils together nice and tight)
  • Wire clippers and/or Nail Clippers (to clip the ends of wires)
  • Scissors (to cut cotton)
If you wanted to purchase all of these "other tools" in a kit, check out Coil Master. No wire included.
Here is a link for you regarding building coils and getting the resistance just where you want it: Steam Engine

Wow, I appreciate the suggestions. I think I will hold off buying coils for now and try all the options in the kit to see how it goes.

Susan~S, Though I've only watched the beginning of the youtube review it is just what I was looking for. I've seen a few others but they just didn't give me the confidence I need to dive in.

Many great ideas and suggestions, thanks!!
